Drive Pinion: Removal

  1. Remove the differential case. Refer to Differential Case .
  2. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT - EXCURSION & F250-F550 SUPER DUTY PICKUP .
  3. CAUTION: After removal of the pinion nut, discard it. A new nut must be used for installation.

  4. Remove the pinion nut using the special tool.
  5. Remove the pinion flange, using the special tool.
    • Remove the rear axle drive pinion seal. Refer to Drive Pinion Flange and Drive Pinion Seal .
    • Remove the rear axle drive pinion shaft oil slinger.

  6. Install the special tool and, with a soft-faced hammer, drive the pinion out of the front bearing cone and remove it through the rear of the housing.

  7. NOTE: Remove the collapsible spacer and discard it.

  8. Use the special tool to remove the pinion bearing.
  9. NOTE: Do not remove the pinion bearing cups from the carrier casting unless the cups are damaged.

  10. Remove the outer differential bearing cup with the special tools.
  11. Remove the inner differential bearing cup with the special tool.
