P0297 - Vehicle OVERSPEED Condition

P0297 - VEHICLE OVERSPEED CONDITION

Description:  This DTC is set when the vehicle speed limiting conditions have been encountered which is 153 km/h (95 MPH) for F250/F350 vehicles and 130 km/h (81 MPH) for F450/F550 vehicles. The powertrain control module (PCM) limits vehicle speed by limiting fuel when these conditions are met. Fuel is limited only to prevent the vehicle from being operated above the respective speeds and once the vehicle is operated below these speeds there is no limiting.
Possible Causes: 
  • Vehicle driven at a high rate of speed
Diagnostic Aids:  Indicates the vehicle has been operated above the calibrated limited vehicle speed.
Application    Key On Engine Off  Key On Engine Running  Continuous Memory 
All   Diagnose any other PCM DTCs first. If only DTC P0297 is present, clear the DTC. Monitor the VSS PID while driving the vehicle at various speeds comparing the VSS PID values with the speedometer. Repeat the self-test. If DTC P0297 is retrieved again and the VSS PID does not correspond with the speedometer, retrieve any instrument cluster or antilock braking system (ABS) module DTCs. Refer to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) to diagnose any ABS module related DTCs. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND PANEL ILLUMINATION -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) to diagnose any instrument cluster related DTCs.
