WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford Pickup, 2008 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2008 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If smoke is present at the tailpipe, the diesel particulate filter may be damaged. Diagnose and repair the system/component that causes the visible smoke. After the repair, check for correct diesel particulate filter operation. If a concern is still present, install a new diesel particulate filter. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) . Carry out the diesel particulate filter parameter reset function on the scan tool.
SYSTEM/COMPONENT REFERENCE (Section 5 Pinpoint Test unless noted)
Preliminary Checks CARRY OUT preliminary checks. REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT tests 1-5. VERIFY any concerns.
Atmospheric Pressure Rationality Check With the key ON, engine OFF, SELECT the EBP, MAP, and BARO PIDs. If any PID values/readings deviate from atmospheric pressure in your locale by more than 10.35 kPa (1.5 psi), GO to the appropriate pinpoint test for the sensor with the largest difference.
Check Color Of Exhaust Smoke Some white tailpipe exhaust smoke is a normal condition at start-up with temperatures below 10°C (50°F) or with an extended idle in a cool climate.
START the engine. If the exhaust smoke is white, GO to the next step. If the exhaust smoke is black, CHECK for charge air cooler restrictions.
Check White Tailpipe Exhaust Smoke REFER toHARD START/NO START DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Glow Plug System Operation Test.
Check Charge Air Cooler (CAC) for Restrictions CHECK for any conditions that may restrict air flow through the charge air cooler. DISCONNECT the ducts at the CAC and CHECK for restrictions. CHECK inside of the CAC for restrictions. If there are any restrictions, CLEAN as necessary. VERIFY the repair.
Confirm Fuel Quality REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Sufficient Clean Fuel Test.
Check For Out-of-Range Sensor Allow the vehicle temperature to stabilize at the ambient temperature. Verify no accessories are in use (engine block or oil heaters).
CHECK the operation of: intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, intake air temperature 2 (IAT2) sensor, engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor and engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. If the sensor temperature readings are not within 12°C or 22°F, REFER to the applicable pinpoint test in the PINPOINT TESTS article .
Check For Coolant Leak REFER to ENGINE COOLING -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) .
Check Thermostat Operation REFER to ENGINE COOLING -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) .
Check Crankcase Pressure REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Crankcase Pressure Test.
Check the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Test.
Check Mass Air Flow Performance refer to PINPOINT TEST J - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor .
Check Cylinder Compression REFER to ENGINE - 6.4L DIESEL -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) and CARRY OUT the Compression Test.
