Carry out the following preliminary checks:
- Confirm brakes are not dragging.
- Check for oil in coolant.
- Check for the correct engine oil level.
- Confirm acceptable SAE oil viscosity and API rating of oil.
- Confirm oil change within 16,000 km (10,000 miles).
- Check intake air system: check for intake restriction. Air filter restriction gauge and air filter.
- Check the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor for blockage, or disconnection.
- Check the exhaust pressure (EP) sensor and tube for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
- Check the intake air system for leaks.
- Check for low boost pressure.
- Check for over boost condition.
- Check fuel quality. Refer to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES , Sufficient Clean Fuel Test.
- Compare loaded weight of vehicle with performance expectations.
- Power monitor active.
- Transmission concerns.
| SYSTEM/COMPONENT | REFERENCE (Section 5 Pinpoint Test unless noted) |
|---|---|
| Carry out the Power Balance Test | REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . |
| Check Turbocharger | REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Boost Pressure Test. |
| Check Fuel Pump Pressure and Restriction | REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Electric Fuel Pump Pressure Test and Fuel Conditioning Module Inlet Restriction Test. |
| Check For Exhaust Restriction | REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Exhaust Restriction Test. |
| Check the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System | REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Test. |
| Check Mass Air Flow Performance | refer to PINPOINT TEST J - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor . |
| Check For Engine Wear | REFER toPERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Crankcase Pressure Test. |
| Check Oil Pressure | REFER to ENGINE - 6.4L DIESEL -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) . |
| Transmission Concerns | REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT -- F-250-550 (SUPER DUTY PICKUPS) . |
| Atmospheric Pressure Rationality Check | With the key ON, engine OFF, SELECT the EP, MAP, and BARO PIDs. If any PID values/readings deviated from atmospheric pressure in your locale by more than 10.35 kPa (1.5 psi), GO to the appropriate pinpoint test for the sensor with the largest difference. |
| Check For Biased EP Sensor | refer to PINPOINT TEST X - Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) Sensor . |
| Check For Biased EOT Sensor | refer to PINPOINT TEST L - Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) Sensor . |
