Test S: Check Fuel Cap Warning Indicator Inoperative: ZX2

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove any component necessary to gain access to PCM. PCM connector is located under center console. See Figure. Loosen PCM connector retaining bolt. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin harness connector C212. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 104-pin harness connector C212 terminal No. 79 (Yellow/Green wire). See Figure. If CHECK FUEL CAP indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If CHECK FUEL CAP indicator illuminates, repair powertrain control system concern. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Retest system operation.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C254. See Figure. Measure resistance of Yellow/Green wire between instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C254 terminal No. 10 and PCM 104-pin harness connector C212 terminal No. 79. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and gauge contact clips. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
