Test F: Brake Warning Indicator Always On/Inoperative: ZX2
NOTE:
Some ZX2 models are equipped with Daytime Running Lights (DRL). DRL module may also be referred to as DRL control.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect brake master cylinder fluid level sensor 3-pin harness connector C171. Measure resistance between brake fluid level sensor terminals No. 1 and 3 (component side). See Figure. With fluid level below MIN, resistance should be less than 5 ohms. With fluid level above MIN, resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, replace brake fluid level sensor. Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and brake master cylinder fluid level sensor 3-pin harness connector C171 terminal No. 1 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and White instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C258 terminal No. 12 (Black/Yellow wire). See Figure. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Black/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect parking brake signal switch 1-pin harness connector C375. Measure resistance between ground and parking brake signal switch 1-pin harness connector C375 terminal (Green/Yellow wire). With parking brake engaged, resistance should be less than 5 ohms. With parking brake disengaged, resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, replace parking brake signal switch and bracket. Retest system operation.
- Remove instrument cluster, if not already removed. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove BRAKE warning indicator bulb. Check continuity between bulb terminals. If continuity exists and concern is BRAKE indicator is never on, go to next step. If continuity exists and concern is BRAKE indicator is always on, go to step 7. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb. Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Disconnect Daytime Running Lights (DRL) module 8-pin harness connector C297, if equipped. DRL module is located behind right side of instrument panel, on top of kick panel. Measure resistance of Green/Yellow wire between brake master cylinder fluid level sensor 3-pin harness connector C171 and White instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C258 terminal No. 9. See Figure. Measure resistance of Green/Yellow wire between White instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C258 terminal No. 9 and parking brake signal switch or DRL module 8-pin harness connector C297 terminal No. 4 (if equipped). See Fig 1. Resistances in both tests should be less than 5 ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, repair open in Green/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and White instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C258 terminal No. 9 (Green/Yellow wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms and vehicle is equipped with DRL, repair DRL concern. See HEADLIGHTS in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms and vehicle is not equipped with DRL, replace fuel gauge and instrument cluster gauge amplifier. See FUEL GAUGE, TEMPERATURE GAUGE, SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER & TACHOMETER INDICATORS/WARNING BULBS and INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGE AMPLIFIER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Green/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
