Section 521 (Automatic Transmission - 4R70W): Installation: Transmission: Installation

- Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for damage, condition of terminals, corrosion and seal integrity. Repair or install new as required.
- Position, then raise the transmission into the vehicle.
- While holding the torque converter, carefully tilt the front of the transmission downward.
- While continuing to hold the torque converter raise the transmission downward.
- While continuing to hold the torque converter raise the transmission positioning the extension housing above the exhaust crossover pipe.
- Tilt the front of the transmission upward until level.
- Remove the special tool.
- Align the torque converter studs with the mounting holes in the flexplate. Install the transmission to the engine.
- Install and alternately tighten the engine oil pan-to-torque converter housing retaining bolts.

4.6L AND 5.4L ENGINES
- Install and alternately tighten the torque converter housing-to-engine retaining bolts.
- Install four new torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
- Rotate the crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft retaining bolt to position the torque converter stud in the opening.
- Install and snug the new torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nut.
4.6L AND 5.4L ENGINES
- Install four new torque converter nuts.
- Install The Flexplate Inspection Plate And The Bolts. Install The Rear Engine Plate-To-Torque Converter Housing Retaining Bolt.
- Install the access plugs.
- Install The Access Plugs.
- Connect The Solenoid Body Connector.
- Connect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor Connector.
- Connect the Digital TR Sensor Connector.
- If so equipped, install the front A/C deflector assembly with the fasteners.
- Install the bracket onto the hanger and position it to the transmission insulator and retainer. Install the bolt.
- Install the transmission support crossmember.
- Install the transmission support crossmember onto the retainer and insulator studs. Install the retaining nuts hand-tight.
- Raise the transmission, aligning the transmission support crossmember to the frame.
- Install the stud brackets and the retaining nuts.
- Tighten the retainer and insulator-to-crossmember retaining nuts.
- Remove the high-lift transmission jack.
- Connect the catalyst monitoring sensor harness connectors.
- Tighten the clamp.
- Install the exhaust heat shield-to-crossmember retaining bolts.
- Position the EGR vacuum reservoir to the frame. Install the nuts.
- Install the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTERS - EXCEPT DIESEL .
- Install the driveshaft.
- Align the index marks and position the driveshaft on the transmission.
- Position the driveshaft to the rear differential.
- Install the driveshaft.
- Install the driveshaft.
- Install the bolts.
- Install the shift cable and bracket.
- Install the bolts.
- Connect the clip.
- Install the shift cable bracket bolt.
- Install the fluid filler tube into the transmission. Position the retaining brackets. Install the bolt and nut.
- Install the transmission filler tube and bracket bolt.
- Install the transmission filler tube bracket bolt.
- With a drain pan correctly positioned, remove the plugs and connect the fluid cooler tubes.
- Position the fuel and electrical harness bracket for installation. Install and alternately snug, then tighten, the bolts.
- Install the bolts and position fuel line in place.
- Connect the electrical harness connectors.
- Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
- Install the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
- Install the air cleaner air intake duct assembly.
- Connect the battery ground cable.
- Fill the transmission to the specified level with clean automatic transmission fluid.
WARNING: The torque converter must be held firmly in its installed position.CAUTION: Do not allow the torque converter drive flats to disengage from the pump gear.CAUTION: Watch for obstruction.CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and engine and the transmission and exhaust crossover pipe.CAUTION: Use care not to damage the flexplate and the converter pilot. The torque converter must rest squarely against the flexplate, indicating the converter pilot is not binding in the crankshaft.4.2L ENGINE

NOTE: If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter, install a fluid filter service kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) follow the instructions supplied in the kit. If the vehicle was equipped with an inline fluid filter, install a new filter (XC3Z-7B155-BA).NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
