Front Seat Backrest: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mercury Sable and 2003 Ford Taurus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an airbag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
    WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
    The side impact sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar.
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
    2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation procedure.
  2. Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
    3. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instruction in the Front Seat Removal and Installation procedure.
  3. Remove the driver seat. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT .
  4. Remove the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT BACKREST  .
  5. Remove the headrest.
  6. Unclip the J-clip.

    7. CAUTION: Use care when separating the seat back trim cover from the hook and loop strip, or the hook and loop strip can be torn from the seat back foam.

  7. Remove the lower row of hog rings.
    1. Reach a hand under the trim cover and separate the hook and loop strips.
    2. Peel the seat back trim cover upward in an inside out fashion to expose the lower row of hog rings.
    3. Remove the lower row of hog rings.
    8. CAUTION: Use care when separating the seat back trim cover from the hook and loop strip, or the hook and loop strip can be torn from the seat back foam.
    NOTE: Taurus has only one row of hog rings.
    NOTE: Sable is shown, Taurus is similar.

  8. Peel the seat back trim cover upward in an inside out fashion to expose the top row of hog rings.
    1. Reach a hand under the trim cover and separate the hook and loop strips.
    2. Peel the seat back trim cover upward in an inside out fashion to expose the top row of hog rings.
  9. Unclip the J-clip.

  10. Remove the headrest guide pins.

  11. Remove the upholstery from the pad.
    12. NOTE: If the pin-type retainers are damaged, install new retainers. This will keep the wiring harness routed correctly.

  12. Remove the side air bag wiring harness pin-type retainer from the side of the seat back frame.
  13. Remove the frame from the pad.

  14. Remove the air bag wiring harness pushpins.

  15. Remove the nuts.

  16. Remove the seat backrest lumbar support.
