Removal and Installation

CAUTION: If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, you must carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the air conditioning system.
  • If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  • If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  • Install a new evaporator core orifice (19D990) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
  • Install a new suction accumulator (19C836) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
NOTE: Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

    All Vehicles 

  1. If flushing of the air conditioning system has not been performed, recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  2. Remove the RH cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .

    3. Vehicles With CII Power Steering Pump 

  3. Loosen the tensioner and remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.

  4. Disconnect the power steering pressure line.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  5. Remove the nut and detach the power steering line bracket.

    Vehicles With CIII Power Steering Pump 

  6. Remove the power steering pump pulley. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING .
  7. Disconnect the power steering line.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  8. Remove the nut and detach the power steering line bracket.

    All Vehicles 

  9. Using the special tool, install a new O-ring seal on the power steering pressure line fitting.

  10. Remove the nut and detach the power steering line.

  11. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly spring lock coupling.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  12. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly.
    1. Disconnect the dual function pressure cutoff switch electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
    3. Remove the bolt.
    4. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly.
      • Discard the O-ring seals.

  13. Disconnect the compressor field coil electrical connector.
    14. NOTE: The upper LH A/C compressor bolt must be removed with the A/C compressor.

  14. Remove the four bolts and the A/C compressor.
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Install new A/C O-ring seals lubricated in clean PAG oil.
    • If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be performed, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  16. If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be performed, evacuate, leak test and charge the A/C system. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
