Front Safety Belt Retractor - Seat Integrated Restraint (SIR), SuperCab: Removal

WARNING: The safety belt buckle pretensioner and safety belt retractor pretensioner are pyrotechnic devices. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner.
WARNING: The safety belt buckle pretensioner and safety belt retractor pretensioner are pyrotechnic devices. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
WARNING: After deployment, the air bag surface could contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so could result in air bag deployment which could result in personal injury.
NOTE: The driver side is shown, the passenger side is similar.

All seats 

  1. Prepare the vehicle for safety belt retractor removal.
      WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

      The side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar.

      To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

    1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
      2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system deactivation/reactivation procedure.
    2. Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation .
      3. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the seat removal and installation procedure.
    3. Remove the seat on the side with the affected safety belt retractor. Refer to SEATING .
  2. Remove the seat adjuster control knobs, covers and the seat side trim panel screws.
    1. Remove the seat recliner lever cover screw and cover.
    2. Pull to remove the lumbar control knob.
    3. Remove the three seat side trim panel attachment screws (two shown).

  3. Remove the two screws securing the lumbar adjuster control to the seat track riser.
    • Push the lumbar adjuster control inward to provide clearance for trim panel removal.

    Vehicles with power seats 

  4. Disconnect the seat control switch electrical connector.

    Vehicles with heated seats 

  5. Disconnect the heated seat switch electrical connector.

    All seats 

  6. Remove the side trim cover.
    NOTE: Note the seat control switch wire harness routing for installation.
  7. Remove the seat backrest trim panel.
    1. Using a pin-type retainer removal tool, release the two pin-type retainers at the bottom of the seat backrest trim panel (see inset for location).
    2. Push the sides of the seat backrest trim panel together and release the retaining clips (see inset for location).
    3. Slide the seat backrest trim panel down, releasing the upper retainers and remove the seat backrest trim panel.

  8. Release the seat backrest trim cover J-clips.

  9. Remove the inboard, outboard and front tower cap screw covers. Remove four tower cap attachment screws.
    NOTE: The inboard and outboard tower cap covers are not interchangeable.

  10. Remove the screws and the bracket.
    NOTE: Observe the retainer bracket orientation.

  11. Using an appropriate pry tool, separate and remove the outer and front safety belt web guides.
    1. Using a pin-type retainer removal tool, release the two pin-type retainers for the web guide.
    2. Remove the front safety belt web guide.
    3. Remove the upper safety belt web guide.

  12. Remove the nut and the safety belt anchor.

  13. Remove the safety belt retractor.
    NOTE: If reusing the safety belt retractor, do not allow safety belt to completely recoil back into the retractor.
    NOTE: Safety belt retractors are specific to LH or RH seats and are not interchangeable.
    1. Remove the bolt
    2. Remove the safety belt retractor through the back of the seat.
      • Route out the safety belt, guide, tongue and anchor.
