Shaft Seal: Installation

All vehicles

CAUTION: Do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the A/C compressor.

Clean the A/C compressor nose area.
Place the shaft seal on the special tool. Lubricate the shaft seal and the special tool with PAG oil or equivalent.

Position the shaft seal and the special tool over the A/C compressor shaft.

Push the shaft seal onto the A/C compressor shaft with the special tool until seated.

Install the shaft seal snap ring.

Carry out the A/C compressor external leak test. Refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
Install the shaft seal felt.

Place one nominal thickness A/C clutch disc and hub spacer in the clutch hub spline opening.

5.4L, 6.0L diesel and 6.8L vehicles
Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.

Install the A/C clutch disc and hub retaining bolt.
1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool.
2. Tighten the bolt.

7.3L diesel vehicles
Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.

Install the A/C clutch disc and hub retaining bolt.
1. Using the special tool, hold the A/C clutch disc and hub.
2. Tighten the bolt.

All vehicles
Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by removing or adding A/C clutch disc and hub spacers.

Install the A/C compressor. Refer to AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 5.4L, 6.0L Diesel and 6.8L or AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 7.3L Diesel Engine .
