Removal and Installation

CAUTION: If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, you must carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the air conditioning system.

If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor. Refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed. Refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
Install a new evaporator core orifice (19D990) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
Install a new suction accumulator (19C836) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
NOTICE: Refrigerant Compressor Oil (Mineral Oil) F73Z-19577-AA (Motorcraft YN-9-A) should be used to lubricate R-134a refrigerant system O-ring seals only and should not be added to R-134a refrigerant systems as an A/C compressor lubricant. PAG Refrigerant Compressor Oil F7AZ-19D589-DA (Motorcraft YN-12-C) or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B only should be used as an A/C compressor lubricant.

NOTE: If installing a new A/C compressor, the A/C clutch disc and hub (19D786), A/C compressor pulley (19D784) and A/C clutch field coil (19D798) must be inspected and transferred from the old unit to the new unit if suitable for reuse.

NOTE: Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

All vehicles

Position the vehicle on a hoist with the gear selector in NEUTRAL. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING -- EXCURSION & F250-F550 SUPER DUTY
If flushing of the refrigerant system has not been carried out, recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to HVAC SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION -- EXCURSION & F250-F550 SUPER DUTY
Remove the cooling fan stator assembly. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM -- EXCURSION & F250-F550 SUPER DUTY
Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley
Disconnect the field coil electrical connector

Remove the nut and the battery cable bracket.

Remove the ground cable and the ground stud.

4x2 Excursion, 4x2 F-250 and 4x2 F-350 vehicles

Remove the RH fender splash shield. Refer to FRONT END BODY PANELS .

All vehicles

Loosen The Bolt And Detach The Compressor Manifold And Tube assembly.

NOTE: The lower rear bolt must be removed with the A/C compressor.
Remove the bolts.

Remove the A/C compressor.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If a new A/C compressor is to be installed, the clutch assembly must be transferred from the old unit to the new unit. For additional information, refer to CLUTCH AND CLUTCH FIELD COIL - 5.4L, 6.0L Diesel and 6.8L
- Install a new O-ring seals lubricated in clean PAG oil.
- If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. Refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak-test, and charge the refrigerant system. Refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
