Oil Pan - Automatic Transmission: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Partially drain the radiator and disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator.
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
  4. Remove the accelerator cable splash shield.

  5. Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables and return spring.

  6. Position the accelerator cable bracket aside.
    • Remove the bolts.
    • Position the bracket and cables aside.

  7. Disconnect the PCV vacuum and coolant hoses.

  8. Disconnect the following vacuum lines:
    • PCV
    • brake booster
    • engine sensor control wiring harness

  9. Disconnect the vacuum line.

  10. Disconnect the idle air control motor electrical connector and the bypass hose.

  11. If equipped, disconnect the EGR transducer and the throttle position sensor connectors.

  12. If equipped, disconnect the EGR transducer vacuum lines.

  13. If equipped, disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and the exhaust manifold tube lower fitting.

  14. If equipped, remove the EGR transducer bracket.

  15. If equipped, remove the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube.
    • Disconnect the upper fitting.
    • Remove the tube.

  16. If equipped, disconnect the EGR valve vacuum line.

    17. NOTE: The EGR valve is shown removed for clarity.

  17. If equipped, disconnect the EVR solenoid electrical and vacuum harness.
    18. NOTE: The idle air control valve is shown removed for clarity.

  18. Remove the throttle body adapter:
    • Remove the four bolts.
    • Remove the throttle body adapter.
    • Remove the throttle body adapter gasket.
  19. Remove the jack handle and the lug wrench.

  20. Remove the bolts and position the degas bottle out of the way.

  21. Remove the two screws at the top of the fan shroud and position the fan shroud toward the engine.
  22. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATORS & REGULATORS .
  23. Install the special tool on the engine using the generator mounting holes.

  24. Raise and support the vehicle.
  25. Remove the engine mount nuts.

    26. CAUTION: Damage to the TSS/OSS may occur and cause transmission or torque converter operational concerns if the transmission is raised prior to removing TSS/OSS.
    CAUTION: Sensor bosses must be cleaned prior to removal and then plugged to prevent contamination from damaging internal components.
  26. If the vehicle is equipped with output shaft sensors (OSS), remove the sensors and install plugs in the transmission.
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28. Raise the engine using a floor crane attached to the support bracket.
  29. Support the engine using the 3-Bar Engine Support by inserting the J-hook.

  30. Raise and support the vehicle.
  31. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil bypass filter.
  32. Remove the bolt and position the oil cooler aside.

  33. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
  34. Remove the flywheel inspection plate.

    35. CAUTION: Support the transmission on the oil pan rails only or internal transmission damage can occur.
  35. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  36. Remove transmission mount nuts.

  37. Using the transmission jack, raise the transmission.
  38. Remove the nut and detach the transmission cooling tube bracket.

  39. Remove the bolts and partially lower the oil pan.

  40. Remove the bolts retaining the oil pump screen cover and pickup tube. Remove the pickup tube and spacer and let them drop into the oil pan.

  41. Remove the oil pan and the oil pan gasket from the rear of the engine.
    42. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.
  42. Clean the mating surfaces and thoroughly clean the oil pan.
