Removal and Installation

All vehicles 

1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

   Vehicles with 7.3L engine 

2. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cooler outlet duct.

3. Press the brake pedal several times to discharge the accumulator.

   All vehicles 

4. Disengage the steering coupling shield from the line fitting and slide upward on the steering shaft.

5. Remove the pinch bolt.
   • Turn the steering wheel as necessary to access the bolt.
   • Make sure the steering column is locked.

CAUTION: During installation, do not overtighten the fittings.

6. Disconnect the lines.
7. Raise the vehicle.
8. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
   • Discard the cotter pin.

9. Using the special tool, disconnect the drag link.

10. Remove the bolts, washers and the steering gear.

11. Remove the nut.

12. Using the special tool, remove the steering gear sector shaft arm.

13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Using the special tool, install new seal rings on the power steering hose fittings.

14. Fill and leak check the system. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .

    Vehicles with 7.3L engine 

15. Bleed the hydro-boost system. Refer to POWER BRAKE ACTUATION .
