Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Monterey and 2004 Ford Freestar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Pull out on instrument panel center trim panel to release retaining clips. See Fig 1 . Remove in-vehicle temperature switch, if equipped. Disconnect connector and remove PAD indicator (part of vent window switch assembly).
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. DO NOT activate air bag system at this time. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
