Possible Causes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mercury Sable and 2003 Ford Taurus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

A driver-side air bag status fault could be caused by faulty wiring, terminals or connectors, faulty driver-side air bag sub-harness, faulty clockspring, faulty driver-side air bag module or faulty RCM. A passenger-side air bag status fault could be caused by faulty wiring, terminals or connectors, faulty passenger-side air bag module or faulty RCM.

  1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. Flag DTC B2293. See BIT-MAPPED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Retrieve and record any flagged faults. If DTC B2293 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B2293 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  38 .
  2. Check driver-side & passenger-side air bag modules

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B2293 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, use flagged faults recorded in step  1 to find appropriate step. If flagged fault of "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist. Entire test must be carried out before replacing RCM.
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with short to ground (STG) fault, go to next step.
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to step  5 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  7 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  11 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 1 (P-ABAG) with short to ground (STG), go to step  14 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No.1 (P-ABAG) with short to battery (STB), go to step  15 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 1 (P-ABAG) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  16 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 1 (P-ABAG) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  18 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2 with short to ground (STG) fault, go to step  20 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to step  22 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  24 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  28 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with short to ground (STG), go to step  31 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with short to battery (STB), go to step  32 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  33 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  35 .

    If DTC B2293 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test and if flagged fault of "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist. Entire test must be carried out before replacing air bag module. If DTC B2293 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test and fault was flagged against driver-side air bag module, replace driver-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  39 . If DTC B2293 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test and fault was flagged against passenger-side air bag module, replace passenger-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  39 .

  3. Check circuits for short to ground between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire, circuit No. 614). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 (Gray/White wire, circuit No. 615). If resistance is less than one megohm on either circuit, go to next step. If resistance is more than one megohm on both circuits, go to step  37 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  4. Check circuit for short to ground between clockspring & RCM

    Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire). Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 (Gray/White wire). If resistance is less than one megohm, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than one megohm, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 .
  5. Check circuits for short to battery between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire, circuit No. 614). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 (Gray/White wire, circuit No. 615). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, go to step  37 . If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, go to next step.
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  6. Check circuits for short to battery between clockspring & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire). Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 (Gray/White wire). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  7. Check circuit for open between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 and harness side of driver-side air bag module connector C216, terminal No.1 (Gray/Orange wire, circuit No. 614). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step  9 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, go to next step.
  8. Check circuit for open between clockspring & RCM

    Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 and harness side of lower clockspring connector C218A, terminal No. 1 (Gray/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Gray/Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  9. Check circuit for open between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 and harness side of driver-side air bag module connector C218A, terminal No. 2 (Gray/White wire, circuit No. 615). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, go to next step.
  10. Check circuit for open between clockspring & RCM

    Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 and harness side of lower clockspring connector C218A, terminal No. 2 (Gray/White wire). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Gray/Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  11. Check circuits for low resistance between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of air bag module connector C218A, terminals No. 1 (Gray/Orange wire, circuit No. 614) and No. 2 (Gray/White wire, circuit No. 615). See Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 .
  12. Check for low resistance between RCM circuits

    Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of RCM connector C310A, pins No. 1 and 2. See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
  13. Check circuit for low resistance between clockspring & RCM

    Reconnect RCM connector C310A. Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between harness side of lower clockspring connector C218A, terminals No. 1 (Gray/Orange wire) and No. 2 (Gray/White wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance between Gray/Orange and Gray/White wires. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  14. Check circuits for short to ground between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 (Light Blue/Orange wire, circuit No. 607). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 4 (Pink/Black wire, circuit No. 616). If resistance is less than one megohm on either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than one megohm on both circuits, go to step  37 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  15. Check circuits for short to battery between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 (Light Blue/Orange wire, circuit No. 607). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 4 (Pink/Black wire, circuit No. 616). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, go to step  37 . If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  16. Check circuit for open between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 3 and harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector C256, terminal No. 1 (Light Blue/Orange wire, circuit No. 607). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Light Blue/Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  17. Check circuit for open between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 4 and harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector C256, terminal No. 2 (Pink/Black wire, circuit No. 616). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Pink/Black wire. Go to step  39 .
  18. Check circuit for low resistance between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector C256, terminals No. 1 (Light Blue/Orange wire, circuit No. 607) and No. 2 (Pink/Black wire, circuit No. 616). See Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
  19. Check RCM resistance

    Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of RCM connector C310A, pins No. 3 and 4. See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance between Light Blue/Orange and Pink/Black wires. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  20. Check circuits for short to ground between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 5 (Yellow/White wire, circuit No. 1516). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 6 (Red/Orange wire, circuit No. 1517). If resistance is less than one megohm on either circuit, go to next step. If resistance is more than one megohm on both circuits, go to step  37 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  21. Check circuit for short to ground between clockspring & RCM

    Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminals No. 5 (Yellow/White wire) and No. 6 (Red/Orange wire). If resistance is less than one megohm, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than one megohm, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 .
  22. Check circuits for short to battery between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 5 (Yellow/White wire, circuit No. 1516). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 6 (Red/Orange wire, circuit No. 1517). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, go to step  37 . If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, go to next step.
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  23. Check circuits for short to battery between clockspring & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 5 (Yellow/White wire, circuit No. 1516). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 6 (Red/Orange wire, circuit No. 1517). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  24. Check circuit for open between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 5 and harness side of driver-side air bag module harness connector C216, terminal No. 3 (Yellow/White wire, circuit No. 1516). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step  26 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, go to next step.
  25. Check circuit for open between clockspring & RCM

    Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 5 and harness side of lower clockspring connector C218A, terminal No. 3 (Yellow/White wire). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Yellow/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  26. Check circuit for open between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 6 and harness side of driver-side air bag module harness connector C216, terminal No. 4 (Red/Orange wire, circuit No. 1517). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, go to next step.
  27. Check circuit for open between clockspring & RCM

    Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 6 and harness side of lower clockspring connector C218A, terminal No. 4 (Red/Orange wire, circuit No. 1517). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Red/Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  28. Check circuit for low resistance between driver-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of driver-side air bag module connector C216, terminals No. 3 (Yellow/White wire, circuit No. 1516) and No. 4 (Red/Orange wire, circuit No. 1517). See Fig 1 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
  29. Check RCM resistance

    Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of RCM connector C310A, pins No. 5 and 6. See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
  30. Check circuit for low resistance between clockspring & RCM

    Reconnect RCM connector C310A. Access and disconnect lower clockspring connector C218A. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between harness side of driver-side air bag module connector C218A, terminals No. 3 (Yellow/White wire) and No. 4 (Red/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, replace clockspring. Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  31. Check circuits for short to ground between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 13 (Red/White wire, circuit No. 1518). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 14 (Light Green/Red wire, circuit No. 1519). If resistance is less than one megohm on either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 . If resistance is more than one megohm on both circuits, go to step  37 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  32. Check circuits for short to battery between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 13 (Red/White wire, circuit No. 1518). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminals No. 14 (Light Green/Red wire, circuit No. 1519). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, go to step  37 . If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  33. Check circuit for open between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 13 and harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector C256, terminal No. 3 (Red/White wire, circuit No. 1518). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Red/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
  34. Check circuit for open between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 14 and harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector C256, terminal No. 4 (Light Green/Red wire, circuit No. 1519). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step  37 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Light Green/Red wire. Go to step  39 .
  35. Check circuit for low resistance between passenger-side air bag & RCM

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module simulator from harness connector. Measure resistance between harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector C256, terminals No. 3 (Red/White wire, circuit No. 1518) and No. 4 (Light Green/Red wire, circuit No. 1519). If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step  37 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  39 .
    NOTE: Due to shorting bar feature in electrical connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars.
  36. Check RCM resistance

    Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of RCM connector C310A, pins No. 13 and 14. See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance in appropriate wire. Go to step  39 .
    NOTE: Ensure all air bag system simulators, sensor electrical connectors and RCM electrical connectors are connected prior to carrying out on-demand self-test or erroneous faults may be set.
  37. Confirm RCM fault

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect all air bag module simulators. Reconnect RCM connectors. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. Flag DTC B2293. Retrieve and record any flagged faults. If DTC B2293 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and "?" was flagged by scan tool, carry out entire test before replacing RCM. Replace RCM. Go to step  39 . If DTC B2293 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is corrected. Go to step  39 .
  38. Check for intermittent fault

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform on-demand self-test. Flag DTC 2293.

    If DTC B2293 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, retrieve and record any flagged faults. Check for causes of intermittent fault at or near affected air bag module connector. Repair any intermittent problems found and go to next step. If intermittent problem was not found, use flagged faults to find appropriate test step. If flagged fault "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist and entire test must be carried out before replacing RCM.

    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with short to ground (STG) fault, go to step  3 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to step  5 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  7 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 (D-ABAG) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  11 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 1 (P-ABAG) with short to ground (STG), go to step  14 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No.1 (P-ABAG) with short to battery (STB), go to step  15 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 1 (P-ABAG) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  16 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 1 (P-ABAG) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  18 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2 with short to ground (STG) fault, go to step  20 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to step  22 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  24 .
    • For driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 (D-ABAG2) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  28 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with short to ground (STG), go to step  31 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with short to battery (STB), go to step  32 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with open circuit (O-CIR), go to step  33 .
    • For passenger-side air bag module squib No. 2 (P-ABAG2) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step  35 .

    If DTC B2293 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is intermittent. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step.

  39. Check for additional DTCs

    Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
