WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Econoline. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Release fuel pressure from fuel tank and lines. See FUEL TANK EVACUATION . Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. On center fuel tank, remove fuel tank pressure and fuel tank temperature sensors. See FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR  and FUEL TANK TEMPERATURE SENSOR  . On center and/or rear fuel tank, disconnect fuel tank solenoid harness connector and remove fuel tank solenoid. To install, replace "O" rings on fuel tank sensors and spacers. Lubricate NEW "O" rings with motor oil. Check the gap between solenoid valve and tank surface at all six flat sides of solenoid valve. The gap must be .002" (.05 mm) or less to ensure proper sealing. If gap is excessive, remove solenoid valve and inspect. Reinstall or replace solenoid valve until gap is within specification. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
