Test O: Water In Fuel Sensor: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause a bad connection, misdiagnosis and damaged components. Install the connector on where the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM lever to fully seat the connector.
NOTE: When the PCM engine harness connector is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. All DTCs must be cleared before returning the vehicle to service.

  1. 1) Preliminary Diagnosis For DTC P2269

Perform visual inspection. Connect the scan tool. Retrieve and record all DTCs. Clear all DTCs. Perform the KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. Is DTC P2269 present? If yes, go to next step. If no, unable to duplicate condition. Check for loose connections, damaged or corroded terminals or pins. Wiggle harness attempting to recreate fault. Repair as necessary. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - DIESEL - 6.0L article if a driveability concern exists.
  2. 2) DTC P2269

    Possible causes are:
    • Water in the fuel filter housing.
    • Shorted circuit.
    • Damaged connection.
    • Damaged sensor.
    • Damaged PCM.

Route a hose from the fuel drain line, located on the engine right front lower side, to a 1-qt clear container. Start engine. Open the fuel filter housing drain valve, and close when you have filled the container. Does the container have any water or contaminants? If yes, clear DTCs and retest the system. If WIFIL comes back on and DTC P2269 returns, repeat this step. If water is still found in fuel sample, flush and clean the fuel tank and fuel system. If no, go to next step.

  3. 3) Check WIF Sensor Circuit For Short To Ground

Key on, engine off. Disconnect the WIF harness connector. Clear Continuous DTCs. Cycle ignition key. Retrieve Continuous DTCs. Key off. Did DTC P2269 reset? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  5).
  4. 4) Check For Short To Ground In The Signal Circuit

Disconnect PCM body harness connector C1381A. Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 on WIF sensor harness connector and ground. See Figure. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, install a new PCM. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system. If no, repair short to ground in WIF sensor circuit. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  5. 5) Check WIF Sensor

Remove the fuel filter, and inspect inside of filter housing for foreign material. Is debris found inside the housing? If yes, clean out filter housing. Remove WIF sensor. Clean and reinstall. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system. If no, install a new WIF sensor. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
