Test J: Mass Air Flow Sensor: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause a bad connection, misdiagnosis and damaged components. Install the connector on where the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM lever to fully seat the connector.
NOTE: When the PCM engine harness connector is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. All DTCs must be cleared before returning the vehicle to service.

    • Faulty PCM.

Inspect air intake for restrictions. Key off. Disconnect the MAF harness connector. Key on. Measure the voltage between the MAF sensor connector terminal No. 2 (VPWR circuit) and MAF sensor connector terminals No. 1 and 3 (PWR GND and signal return circuit). See Figure. Is the voltage measurement greater than 10.5 volts at each circuit? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in the vehicle power or vehicle ground circuit. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.

  5. 5) Check MAF Sensor Signal Circuit For A Short To Ground

Key off. Disconnect the PCM body harness electrical connector C1381A. Measure the resistance between MAF sensor harness connector terminal No. 5 (signal circuit) and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair short to ground in signal circuit. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  6. 6) Check MAF Sensor Signal Circuit For An Open

Measure the resistance between MAF sensor harness connector terminal No. 5 (signal circuit) and PCM body harness connector C1381A terminal No. 42. See CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Is the resistance less than 0.5 ohm? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in signal circuit. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  7. NOTE: This step may cause DTC P0103 to set.

  8. 7) Check MAF Sensor Circuits
Reconnect the PCM body harness electrical connector. Key on, engine off. Access MAF VOLT PID. Record MAF VOLT PID reading. Install a jumper wire between the MAF sensor connector terminal No. 5 (signal circuit) and 2 (MAF VPWR circuit). Does the MAF PID change from less than 0.04 volt to greater than 4.5 volts? If yes, install a new MAF sensor. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system. If yes, install a new PCM. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  9. 8) DTC P0103

    Possible causes are:
    • Restricted inlet air flow.
    • MAF signal circuit shorted to power.
    • Open ground circuit.
    • Faulty MAF.
    • Faulty PCM.

Disconnect air inlet and check for restrictions. Are any restrictions found? If yes, remove restrictions in air flow. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system. If no, go to next step.

  10. 9) Induce Opposite Failure

Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector. Perform the KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. Is DTC P0102 present? If yes, restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs. go to step  12). If no, go to next step.
  11. 10) Check MAF Sensor Signal Circuit For A Short To Voltage
