Test As: Loss Of Communication With FICM: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause a bad connection, misdiagnosis and damaged components. Install the connector on where the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM lever to fully seat the connector.
NOTE: When the PCM engine harness connector is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. All DTCs must be cleared before returning the vehicle to service.

  1. 1) PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS FOR DTC U0105

Connect scan tool. Retrieve and record all DTCs. Clear all DTCs. Perform the KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. Is DTC U0105 present? If yes, go to next step. If no, unable to duplicate condition. Check for loose connection, damaged or corroded pins. Wiggle harness attempting to recreate the fault.
  2. 2) DTC U0105

    Possible causes are:
    • Loose connection.
    • Open circuit.
    • Shorted circuit.
    • Faulty PCM.
    • Faulty FICM.

Disconnect FICM harness connector C1388C. Disconnect PCM engine harness connector C1381C. Perform a visual inspection, check for loose connections or damaged wiring shield between PCM engine harness connector C1381C terminals No. 26, 37 and FICM harness connector C1388C terminals No. 30 and 31. See CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Is wiring and shield okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as necessary. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs, perform OBD drive cycle. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURE . Return the vehicle to service.

  3. 3) Check FICM CAN Circuits For A Short To Voltage

Key on. Measure the voltage between PCM engine harness connector C1381C terminals No. 26, 37 and ground. Is the voltage less than 0.2 volt? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair short to voltage. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  4. 4) Check FICM CAN Circuits For A Short Together

Key off. Measure the resistance between PCM engine harness connector C1381C terminals No. 26 and 37. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair shorted circuits. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  5. 5) Check FICM CAN Circuits For A Short To Ground

Key off. Measure the resistance between PCM engine harness connector C1381C terminals No. 26, 37 and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair short to voltage. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
  6. 6) Check FICM CAN Circuits For An Open

Key off. Measure the resistance between PCM engine harness connector C1381C terminal No. 37 and FICM harness connector C1388C terminal No. 30; and between PCM engine harness connector C1381C terminal No. 26 and FICM harness connector C1388C terminal No. 31. Are the resistances less than 0.5 ohm? If yes, install a new PCM. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system. If no, repair open in the faulted CAN circuit. Restore the vehicle. Clear DTCs and retest the system.
