Test Ah: VISCTRONIC Drive Fan Clutch: Testing
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause a bad connection, misdiagnosis and damaged components. Install the connector on where the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM lever to fully seat the connector.
NOTE:
When the PCM engine harness connector is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. All DTCs must be cleared before returning the vehicle to service.
- 1) Preliminary Diagnosis
Key off. Connect the scan tool. Carry out the PCM self-test. See QUICK TEST . Are any DTCs present? If yes, for DTC P0480, go to step 4). For DTC P0528, go to step 3). For all other DTCs, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to next step. - 2) Check The Cooling Fan For Mechanical Binding
Key off. Manually rotate the cooling fan. Does the fan clutch indicate any abnormal binding? If yes, see appropriate ELECTRIC COOLING FANS article in ENGINE COOLING for further diagnosis and testing. If no, go to next step. - 3) Check The VDF Clutch Operation
Key on, engine running. Using scan tool, access Output Test Mode. Access the FANSS PID. Monitor the FANSS PID and the VDF clutch fan. Increase the VDF duty cycle. Does the fan speed change and does the FANSS PID indicate an RPM change? If yes, the system is operating correctly. Repair cooling system concerns as necessary. If no, proceed as follows:- If the fan speed did not change, go to next step.
- If the fan speed did change and the FANS PID did not indicate an RPM change, go to step 12).
- 4) Check The VDF Solenoid Resistance
Key off. Disconnect the VDF clutch. Measure the resistance between the VDF clutch solenoid VPWR circuit terminal No. 5, component side and the VDF clutch solenoid control circuit terminal No. 4, component side. See Figure. Is the resistance 6.0-10.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, install a new VDF clutch. - 5) Check The VDF Solenoid VPWR Circuit For Voltage
Key on, engine off. Measure the voltage between the VDF clutch solenoid VPWR circuit terminal No. 5, harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10.5 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the circuit. - 6) Check VDF Solenoid Control Circuit For An Open
Key off. Disconnect the PCM. Measure the resistance between the VDF clutch solenoid control circuit terminal No. 4, harness side and the PCM engine connector C1381C terminal No. 14, harness side. See CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the circuit. - 7) Check The VDF Solenoid Control Circuit For A Short To Ground
Measure the resistance between the VDF clutch solenoid control circuit terminal No. 4, harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the circuit. - 8) Check The VDF Control Circuit For Short To Power
Key on, engine off. Measure the voltage between VDF clutch solenoid control circuit terminal No. 4, harness side and ground. Is any voltage indicated? If yes, repair the circuit. If no, install a new PCM.NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 8) to step 12). No test procedures have been omitted. - 12) Check The Fan Speed Sensor For Voltage
Key off. Disconnect the VDF clutch. Key on, engine off. Measure the voltage between the fan speed sensor VREF circuit terminal No. 6, harness side and the fan speed sensor SIG RTN circuit terminal No. 2, harness side. See Figure. Is the voltage greater than 10.5 volts? If yes, go to step 17). If no, go to next step. - 13) Check The VREF Circuit For Voltage
Measure the voltage between the fan speed sensor VREF circuit terminal No. 6, harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10.5 volts? If yes, go to step 16). If no, go to next step. - 14) Check The VREF Circuit For An Open
Key off. Disconnect the PCM. Measure the resistance between the fan speed sensor VREF circuit terminal No. 6, harness side and the PCM engine connector C1381C terminal No. 46, harness side. See CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the circuit. - 15) Check The VREF Circuit For A Short To Ground
Key off. Disconnect the PCM. Measure the resistance between the fan speed sensor VREF circuit terminal No. 6, harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, install a new PCM. If no, repair the circuit. - 16) Check The Fan Speed Sensor SIG RTN Circuit For An Open
Key off. Disconnect the PCM. Measure the resistance between fan speed sensor SIG RTN circuit terminal No. 2, harness side and the PCM engine connector C1381C terminal No. 22, harness side. See Figure. See CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, install a new PCM. If no, repair the circuit. - 17) Check The Fan Speed Sensor Signal Circuit For An Open
Key off. Disconnect the PCM. Measure the resistance between the fan speed sensor signal circuit terminal No, 1, harness side and the PCM engine connector C1381C terminal No. 6, harness side.
