Test AP: Injector Control Pressure Too High - Engine Off: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause a bad connection, misdiagnosis and damaged components. Install the connector on where the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM lever to fully seat the connector.
NOTE: When the PCM engine harness connector is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. All DTCs must be cleared before returning the vehicle to service.

  1. 1) Preliminary Diagnosis For Code DTC P2289

Connect the scan tool. Retrieve and record all DTCs. Clear the DTCs. Perform the KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  and RETRIEVE/CLEAR CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTCS  under QUICK TEST. Is DTC P2289 present? If yes, go to next step. If no, unable to duplicate condition. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - DIESEL - 6.0L article if a driveability concern exists.
  2. 2) DTC P2289

    Possible causes are:
    • Biased ICP sensor.
    • Open SIG RTN circuit.
    • Signal circuit shorted to voltage.
    • PCM.

Disconnect the ICP sensor. Disconnect the PCM. Measure the resistance between the ICP sensor SIG RTN circuit terminal "A", harness side and the PCM engine connector C1381C terminal No. 25, harness side. See Figure and CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the circuit.

  3. 3) Check The Signal Circuit For A Short To Voltage

Key on, engine off. Measure the voltage between the ICP sensor signal circuit terminal "C", harness side and ground. Is any voltage indicated? If yes, repair the circuit. If no, go to next step.
  4. 4) ICP Sensor Check

Key off. Connect the ICP sensor. Connect the PCM. Key on, engine off. Access the ICP PID. Is the ICP PID voltage 0.18-0.24 volt? If yes, install a new PCM. If no, install a new ICP sensor.
