Test AO: Injector Control Pressure Too High: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause a bad connection, misdiagnosis and damaged components. Install the connector on where the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM lever to fully seat the connector.
NOTE: When the PCM engine harness connector is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. All DTCs must be cleared before returning the vehicle to service.

  1. 1) Preliminary Diagnosis For DTC P2284 Or P2288

Connect the scan tool. Perform the KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST , KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  and RETRIEVE/CLEAR CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTCS  under QUICK TEST. Retrieve and record all DTCs. Is DTC P2284 or P2288 present? If yes, proceed as follows:
    • For KOEO and Continuous DTC P2284 or P2288, go to next step.
    • For KOER DTC P2284 or P2288, go to step  9).

If no, unable to duplicate condition. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - DIESEL - 6.0L article if a driveability concern exists.

  2. 2) DTC P2284 Or P2288

    Possible causes are:
    • Incorrect oil or viscosity.
    • Poor oil quality.
    • Gelled fuel/no fuel.
    • Low fuel pressure.
    • Biased ICP sensor.
    • IPR valve.
    • High-pressure oil system leak.
    • High-pressure oil pump.
    • PCM.

Verify correct oil quality/viscosity and correct fuel grade are being used for the temperature conditions. Is the oil and fuel quality okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the fuel or oil condition.

  3. 3) Check Fuel Pressure

Measure the fuel pressure at the regulator block. Measure the fuel pressure at idle and on the road at WOT at full load. Fuel pressure at idle should be 45 psi (310 kPa) minimum and 30-70 psi (207-482 kPa) at WOT full load. Is the fuel pressure within specifications? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the fuel system concern.
  4. 4) Perform The KOER On-Demand Self-Test

Perform the KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. Is DTC P2284 or P2288 present? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  12).
NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 4) to step 6). No test procedures have been omitted.
  5. 6) ICP Sensor Check

Key on, engine off. Using scan tool, access the ICP PID. Is the ICP PID voltage 0.18-0.24 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, install a new ICP sensor.
  6. 7) CHECK FOR OIL AERATION

Accelerate the engine and hold at 3300 RPM for three minutes. Using scan tool, access the ICP PID. Is the injection control pressure increase greater than 1800 psi (12.4 MPa)? If yes, change the engine oil. Retest the system. If no, go to next step.
  7. 8) Check The IPR Duty Cycle Under Vehicle Load

Access the IPR PID. Operate the vehicle at WOT and a full load condition. Does the IPR duty cycle increase to 65 percent? If yes, install a new IPR valve. If no, unable to duplicate failure.
  8. 9) KOER On-Demand DTC P2284 Or P2288

DTC P2284 or P2288 indicates that injection control pressure was above or below commanded desired pressure during self-test mode.

  9. 10) Check Fuel Pressure

Measure the fuel pressure at the regulator block. Measure the fuel pressure at idle and on the road at WOT at full load. Fuel pressure at idle should be 45 psi (310 kPa) minimum, and 45-80 psi (310-551 kPa) at WOT full load. Is the fuel pressure within specifications? If yes, go to step  12). If no, repair the fuel system concern.
NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 10) to step 12). No test procedures have been omitted.
  10. 12) ICP Sensor Check

Key on, engine off. Using scan tool access the ICP PID. Is the ICP PID voltage 0.18-0.24 volt? If yes, go to next step. If no, install a new ICP sensor.
  11. 13) Oil Aeration Check

Accelerate the engine to wide-open throttle and hold for three minutes. Is the injection control pressure increase greater than 1800 psi (12.4 MPa)? If yes, change the engine oil. Retest the system. If no, go to next step.
  12. NOTE: During KOER On-Demand Self-Test, ICP will be commanded high 2465 psi (17 MPa), then low 725 psi (5 MPa) and then the EBP will be commanded high and low.

  13. 14) Check The ICP Sensor Voltage While Performing Self-Test
Install the ICP/EBP Adapter Cable (D94T-50-A) or equivalent between the ICP sensor and the engine harness. Measure the voltage between the ICP sensor signal circuit, harness side and ground. Perform the KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. Does the voltage reading increase above 3 volts and then decrease to approximately 1 volt during the ICP portion of the KOER test? If yes, if DTC P2284 or P2288 was displayed, install a new PCM. If no, go to next step.
  14. 15) Injector Leak Test

Disconnect the high pressure hose from right cylinder head. Using the Oil High Pressure Leakage Adapter Set (D94T-6600-A), plug the right high pressure hose. Using scan tool, access the IPR PID. Start the vehicle and record the IPR reading. Key off. Reconnect the right cylinder head high pressure hose. Disconnect the left cylinder head high pressure hose. Install the adapter and ICP sensor into the high pressure hose. Start the vehicle and record the IPR reading. Are the two readings within 2 percent of each other? If yes, install a new IPR valve. If DTC P2284 or P2288 is still present, go to next step. If no, repair internal oil leak on the bank with the higher IPR reading.
  15. 16) Oil System Pressure Test

Check base engine oil pressure. Oil pressure should be more than 10 psi (69 kPa) at 230°F (110°C). Check for engine oil leaks. Is there a leak and/or is oil pressure below specification? If yes, repair as necessary. If no, install a new high pressure oil pump.
