On-Vehicle Inspection

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Push the flywheel forward. Install the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture (100-002, TOOL-4201-C) against the flywheel face 0.98" (25 mm) from the outer edge of the flywheel. See Fig 1. Zero the dial indicator.
  2. Turn the flywheel one complete revolution while observing the Total Indicator Runout (TIR). The flywheel TIR must not exceed 0.008" (0.203 mm).
  3. If the flywheel TIR does not exceed the 0.008" (0.203 mm), go to step  7. If the flywheel TIR exceeds the specification, remove the flywheel and check for burrs between the flywheel and the crankshaft mounting flange. If burrs exist, remove them and check the crankshaft flange runout. Manufacturer does not supply specification for crankshaft flange runout.
  4. If the crankshaft flange TIR is okay, and no burrs were found between the flywheel and the crankshaft mounting flange, replace flywheel.
  5. If the crankshaft flange TIR is okay, but burrs were removed from between the flywheel and the crankshaft mounting flange, reinstall the flywheel and recheck the flywheel runout. If the flywheel TIR exceeds the specification, install a NEW flywheel.
  6. If the crankshaft flange TIR is not okay, repair as necessary. Reinstall the flywheel. Recheck the flywheel runout. If the flywheel TIR exceeds the specification, install a NEW flywheel.
  7. Install the special tool against the ring gear face adjacent to the teeth. See Fig 2. Zero the dial indicator. Turn the flywheel one complete revolution while observing the TIR.
  8. The ring gear TIR must not exceed 0.022" (0.56 mm). If the ring gear TIR exceeds the specification, install a NEW flywheel and ring gear assembly.
