Camshaft Bearings: Installation

CAUTION: Failure to use the correct expanding collet can cause severe camshaft bearing damage. Make sure the front camshaft bearing is installed to the specified distance below the front face of the cylinder block.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure oil hole in each camshaft bearing aligns with oil hole in cylinder block. Use a length of wire to verify oil hole alignment.
  2. Install front camshaft bearing in cylinder block so front camshaft bearing installed depth is .020-.050" (.51-1.27 mm). Front camshaft bearing installed depth is measured from face of cylinder block to front edge of front camshaft bearing. Install NEW cylinder block camshaft core plug.
    3. NOTE: It is not necessary to check connecting rod and main bearing clearances when installing camshaft bearings
  3. Install the camshaft. See CAMSHAFT . Install the crankshaft. See CRANKSHAFT & MAIN BEARINGS  under CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL.
  4. Install the flywheel onto the crankshaft. See FLYWHEEL . Install the engine into the vehicle. See ENGINE .
