Removal (One-Piece)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Pickup, 2002 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2002 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2002 Ford Excursion, and 2002 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DO NOT allow the output shaft to turn.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. On vehicles with A/T, index mark the drive shaft and the transmission/transfer case extension housing. See Fig 1.
  2. On vehicles with M/T, index mark the drive shaft flange and the transmission/transfer case flange. See Fig 2. On all vehicles except Excursion, index mark the drive shaft and the rear axle pinion flange. See Fig 3. Remove and discard the 4 "U" joint retainer bolts and the 2 "U" joint retainers.
  3. On Excursion, index mark the drive shaft yoke and the rear axle pinion flange. See Fig 4. Remove and discard the 4 drive shaft-to-rear axle pinion flange bolts.
  4. On vehicles with M/T, remove and discard the 4 drive shaft yoke-to-rear axle pinion flange bolts. Remove the drive shaft. On all vehicles except Excursion, disconnect the drive shaft from the rear axle pinion flange.
  5. On vehicles with 2WD and A/T, lower the drive shaft and slide it rearward off the transmission output shaft. Tape the "U" joint bearing cups on the "U" joint to keep them from falling off the "U" joint. Plug the A/T extension housing to prevent fluid loss. On vehicles with 4WD and A/T, remove the 4 bolts at transfer case flange.
    6. CAUTION: The drive shaft yoke fits tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the drive shaft or any of its components to disconnect the yoke from the flange. Pry only in the area shown, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the yoke from the flange. See Fig 5.
  6. On Excursion, use a suitable tool to disconnect the drive shaft yoke from the rear axle pinion flange. See Fig 5. On vehicles with M/T, remove the drive shaft from the vehicle.
  7. On vehicles with 4WD and A/T, lower the drive shaft and slide it rearward off the transmission output shaft. Plug the A/T extension housing to prevent fluid loss. On vehicles with 4WD and A/T, remove the 4 bolts at transfer case flange.
