Removal & Installation (Two-Piece)

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Index mark the drive shaft at the rear axle pinion flange. Remove and discard the bolts. Remove and discard the "U" joint retainers. Disconnect the drive shaft from the rear axle pinion flange. Using mechanics wire, support the drive shaft.
    2. NOTE: Index mark the drive shaft-to-transfer case or transmission pinion flange.
  2. On all vehicles equipped with 4WD, disconnect the drive shaft from the or transmission/transfer case pinion flange. Remove and discard the bolts. Using mechanics wire, support the drive shaft.
  3. On vehicles equipped with 2WD and an A/T, index mark the output shaft to slip yoke. Remove the center bearing support bolts. See Fig 1. Lower the drive shaft and slide the drive shaft rearward off of the transmission output shaft. Plug the extension housing to prevent fluid loss.
  4. Clean grease deposits, dirt and rust from the drive shaft yoke areas and all drive shaft components. Wipe the bearing and rubber insulator of the drive shaft center bearing. DO NOT immerse drive shaft center bearing in solvent.
  5. Inspect the drive shaft slip yoke boot for rips or holes and replace slip yoke boot if necessary. Inspect the drive shaft center bearing support for wear or rough action. If roughness or wear is evident, install a NEW drive shaft center bearing support.
  6. Inspect the center bearing rubber insulator for evidence of hardening, cracking or deterioration. Install a NEW center bearing rubber insulator if necessary. Inspect the transmission, transfer case and axle seals for damage. Install NEW components as necessary.
  7. Lubricate the slip yoke spline with Premium Long-Life Grease (XG-1-C). Install the drive shaft so that the index marks made during removal are aligned or the Yellow mark on the drive shaft tube is in line with the Yellow mark on the rear axle pinion flange.
  8. Install NEW drive shaft retainer bolts and retainers. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
