Rear Drive Shaft: Installation

  1. On vehicles with 2WD and an A/T, lubricate the slip yoke spline with Premium Long-Life Grease (XG-1-C). Remove the plug from the extension housing. Align the index marks and slide the drive shaft slip yoke onto the transmission output shaft.
  2. On vehicles with 4WD and A/T, align the index marks and position the drive shaft yoke on the transfer case flange. On vehicles with M/T, align the index marks and position the drive shaft yoke onto the transmission flange.
  3. On all vehicles except Excursion, remove the tape from the "U" joint bearing cups. Align the index marks and position the "U" joint bearing cups in the rear axle pinion flange.
  4. On Excursion, align the index marks and position the drive shaft yoke on the rear axle pinion flange. See Figure. Loosely install the 4 NEW drive shaft yoke-to-rear axle pinion flange bolts.
  5. On vehicles with M/T, loosely install the 4 NEW drive shaft yoke-to-rear axle pinion flange bolts. On all vehicles, except Excursion, install the 2 NEW retainers and 4 NEW drive shaft yoke-to-rear axle pinion flange bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. On Excursion, the drive shaft yoke fits tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot. To make sure that the yoke seats squarely on the flange, tighten the bolts to specification evenly in a crisscross pattern. See Fig 1. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. On vehicles with M/T, tighten the 4 bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . On all vehicles, lower the vehicle.

  1. On vehicles equipped with a M/T, align the index mark on the drive shaft with the index mark on the transmission and install the front half of three-piece drive shaft to the transmission. Install the NEW drive shaft-to-tranmission flange bolts, but DO NOT tighten at this time. See Figure.
  2. On vehicles equipped with an A/T, align the index marks on the drive shaft slip yoke with the index mark on the transmission and slide the drive shaft slip yoke onto the output shaft. See Figure. On all vehicles, position the front center support bearing and install the bolts, but DO NOT tighten at this time. See Figure.
  3. On vehicles equipped with a M/T, tighten the drive shaft-to-transmission flange bolts and the drive shaft front center bearing bolts. Position the rear half of the three-piece drive shaft assembly and install the center support bearing bolts. DO NOT tighten the center support bearing bolts at this time. See Figure.
  4. Using NEW retainers and bolts, connect the rear half of the three-piece drive shaft assembly to the front half of the three-piece drive shaft. See Figure. Using NEW retainers and bolts, connect the rear half of the three-piece drive shaft assembly to the rear axle pinion flange. See Figure.
  5. Tighten drive shaft-to-rear axle pinion flange bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten the drive shaft center support bearing bolts to specification. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification.
