Removal (F250-F550)

- Remove the 4 screws and the outer shift lever boot. See Fig 1 . Remove the upper gearshift lever bolts. See Fig 2 . Remove the lower shift lever boot. Remove the lower gearshift and shift housing. See Fig 3 .
- On models equipped with 4WD, shift the transfer case into 4H. Remove the screws that attach the bezel and boot assembly to the floor. Remove the bolt that attaches the shift lever to the transfer case control lever assembly. Remove the shift lever, and the bezel and boot assembly. See Fig 4 .
- Slide the bezel and boot assembly upward on the shift lever. Remove the bolt, the shift lever, and the bezel and boot assembly.
- On all models, raise and support the vehicle. If the transmission is being disassembled, drain the transmission fluid. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. Remove the starter. See appropriate STARTERS article. Index mark rear drive shaft. Disconnect the rear drive shaft and position it aside. See DRIVE SHAFTS - EXCURSION & F250-F550 article in DRIVE AXLES.
- Remove the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. Remove any Power Take-Off (PTO) equipment, if equipped. Using the High Lift Jack (014-00942), support the transmission. Securely strap transmission the to the jack. See Fig 5 .
- Remove the transmission mount nuts. See Fig 6 . Remove the right and left side crossmember bolts and nuts. See Fig 7 .
- Disconnect the reverse light switch electrical connector. See Fig 8 . Disconnect wiring harness from the transmission.
- To remove the clutch slave cylinder, push the clutch slave cylinder inward, then rotate counterclockwise 45 degrees. Position slave cylinder aside. Disconnect the transmission cooling tubes. See Fig 9 . Remove the dust cover bolts. See Fig 10 .
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts. On models equipped with diesel engines, remove 6 bolts. On models equipped with gasoline engines, remove 7 bolts. On all models, move the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
