Removal (F150)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Shift transmission into Neutral. Remove the 4 boot assembly-to-floor bolts. Remove boot from shift lever assembly. Remove upper shift lever retaining bolt.
  2. Remove the 4 bolts and the lower gearshift lever boot. See Fig 1 . Remove the 3 bolts and the lower gearshift lever. See Fig 2 . Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. If the transmission is being disassembled, drain the transmission fluid. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. Remove the fuel line bracket from the rear of the transmission.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness from the transmission, the transfer case (if equipped) and the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S). Remove the starter. See appropriate STARTERS article.
  5. Index-mark the rear drive shaft yoke and the pinion flange to maintain initial drive shaft balance during installation. Remove the rear drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFTS - F150 article in DRIVE AXLES.
  6. On models equipped with 4WD, index-mark the front drive shaft yoke and pinion flange and at the transfer case. Remove the skid plate and front drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFTS - F150 article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove the torsion bars and the torsion bar crossmember. Remove the transfer case. Remove the transfer case heat shield. See Fig 3 .
  7. On all models, use the Clutch Coupling Tool (308-182, T88T-70522-A) to disconnect the clutch hydraulic line. Using the High-Lift Transmission Jack (164-R3508), support the transmission.
  8. Securely strap the transmission to the jack. Remove the 2 heat shield bolts from the crossmember. See Fig 4 . Remove the 2 transmission mount nuts, then remove the crossmember.
  9. Remove the exhaust pipe bracket nut. See Fig 5 . Remove the 2 bolts and the transmission mount and exhaust pipe bracket. See Fig 6 .
  10. On models with 4WD, remove the bolt and disconnect the transfer case shift lever. See Fig 7 . On all models, Remove the 2 engine oil pan-to-transmission bolts.
  11. Remove the 6 engine-to-transmission bolts. The upper bolt secures the fuel line bracket. See Fig 8 . Remove the muffler from the exhaust hanger brackets. Remove the tail pipe from the exhaust hanger insulator and tilt the exhaust downward and position it on top of the rear axle.
  12. Remove the transmission by moving the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch. Tilt the front of the transmission downward while lowering from the vehicle.
