- Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Check the engine and transmission mounts for grounding. Check for exhaust manifolds or other engine components grounding on the body or frame. Is there evidence of grounding on the body or frame? If so, repair components as necessary. Test the system for normal operation. If not, go to next step.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Does the vibration stop when the accessory drive belt is removed from the engine? If so, diagnose the accessory drive belt components. If not, stop the engine, reinstall the drive belt and go to next step.
- Depress and hold the clutch pedal. Is a whirring, grating, or grinding noise present only when pedal is pushed? If so, install a NEW clutch release hub and bearing. See CLUTCH ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If not, go to next step.
- Inspect the flywheel. See FLYWHEEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Is the flywheel okay? If so, go to next step. If not, tighten, resurface, or install a NEW flywheel. Test the system for normal operation.
- Inspect the pilot bearing for wear or damage. See PILOT BEARING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Is the pilot bearing worn or damaged? If so, install a NEW pilot bearing. If not, go to next step.
- Operate the engine with the transmission removed. Is the vibration still present? If so, diagnose the engine vibration concern. See appropriate MECHANICAL article in ENGINES. If not, install a NEW pressure plate. Test the system for normal operation.
CAUTION:
Failure to support the engine properly could result in damage to the vehicle. Support the engine securely.
