Master Cylinder Priming - In Vehicle Or Bench
NOTE:
When a new brake master cylinder has been installed or the system has been emptied or partially emptied, it must be primed to prevent air from entering the system.
- For in-vehicle priming, disconnect the brake lines from the brake master cylinder.
- For bench priming, mount the brake master cylinder in a vise and install short brake tubes with the ends bent into the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid (C6AZ-19542-AB) or DOT 3 equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A (United States and Canada only). If DOT 3 is not available, use Ford High Performance DOT 4 Brake Fluid meeting Ford specification SAE J1704 or equivalent. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary.
- Slowly depress the primary piston or, for in-vehicle priming, have an assistant slowly pump the brake pedal until clear brake fluid flows from both brake tubes with no air bubbles.
- If necessary, install the brake master cylinder into the vehicle.
- Remove the short brake tubes and install the master cylinder outlet tubes.
- Have an assistant depress and hold the brake pedal.
- Loosen the brake outlet tubes at the master cylinder one at a time.
- Tighten the outlet tubes to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Repeat the above three steps until no air bubbles are seen in the expelled brake fluid.
- Bleed the brake system. See MANUAL BLEEDING or PRESSURE BLEEDING .
