WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Monterey and 2004 Ford Freestar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. D1 CHECK THE LIGHT SENSOR INPUT
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: SJB Light Sensor PID.
    • Monitor the SJB light sensor status PID while covering and then illuminating the light sensor.
    • Does the PID percentage change with the sensor covered and then illuminated?

    Yes

    GO to  D6.

    No

    GO to D2.

  2. D2 CHECK THE LIGHT SENSOR
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Light Sensor C286.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the SJB light sensor status PID while connecting and then disconnecting a fused (5A) jumper wire between light sensor C286-2, circuit 1416 (YE/WH), harness side and light sensor C286-5, circuit 1203 (BK/LB), harness side.

    • Does the PID percentage change with the jumper wire connected and then disconnected?

    Yes

INSTALL a new light sensor. Refer to LIGHT SENSOR .

CLEAR any DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation

    No

    GO to D3.

  3. D3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1203 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between light sensor C286-5, circuit 1203 (BK), harness side and ground.
Fig 2: Measuring Resistance Between Light Sensor C286-5, Circuit 1203 (BK), Harness Side And Ground

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes

    GO to D4.

    No

REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR any DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

  4. D4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1416 (YE/WH) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
    • Measure the resistance between SJB C2280b-15, circuit 1416 (YE/WH), harness side and light sensor C286-2, circuit 1416 (YE/WH), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes

    GO to D5.

    No

REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR any DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. D5 CHECK CIRCUIT 1416 (YE/WH) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between SJB C2280b-15, circuit 1416 (YE/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present?

    Yes

REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR any DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No

    GO to D6.

  6. D6 CHECK FOR SJB OPERATION
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

    Yes

INSTALL a new SJB. Refer to SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) .

TEST the system for normal operation.

    No

The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR any DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
