Pinpoint Test O: The Reversing Lamps Are Inoperative

NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. O1 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: LH or RH Reversing Lamp

    • For non-cutaway vehicles, measure the resistance between the LH reversing lamp C451-1, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground; or the RH reversing lamp C461-1, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.

    • For cutaway vehicles, measure the resistance between the LH reversing lamp C414-2, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground; or between the RH reversing lamp C417-2, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  O2.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. O2 DETERMINE THE TRANSMISSION TYPE 
    • Connect the previously disconnected reversing lamp.
    • Check the vehicle transmission type.
    • Is the vehicle equipped with a TorqShift transmission? 
    1. YES  : Go to  O5.
    2. NO  : Go to  O3.
  3. O3 CHECK CIRCUIT 296 (WH/VT) FOR AN OPEN (WITHOUT TORQSHIFT) 
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between the digital TR sensor C167-9, circuit 296 (WH/VT), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  O4.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the CJB fuse 12 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. O4 CHECK THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR 
    • Key in OFF position.

    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the digital TR sensor C167-9, circuit 296 (WH/VT), harness side and the digital TR sensor C167-11, circuit 140 (BK/PK), harness side.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the reversing lamps illuminate? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR circuit 140 (BK/PK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. O5 CHECK THE REVERSING LAMP RELAY 
    • Disconnect: Reversing Lamp Relay
    • Substitute a known good relay for the reversing lamp relay.
    • Apply the parking brake.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Select REVERSE.
    • Do the reversing lamps illuminate? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new reversing lamp relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the known good relay. Go to  O6.
  6. O6 CHECK CIRCUIT 296 (WH/VT) FOR AN OPEN (WITH TORQSHIFT) 
    • Select PARK.

    • Measure the voltage between the reversing lamp relay pin 3, circuit 296 (WH/VT), relay box face side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  O7.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the CJB fuse 12 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. O7 CHECK CIRCUIT 140 (BK/PK) FOR AN OPEN

    • Install a fused (5A) jumper wire between the reversing lamp relay pin 5, circuit 140 (BK/PK), relay box face side and the reversing lamp relay pin 3 circuit 296 (WH/VT), relay box face side.
    • Do the reversing lamps illuminate? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to  O8.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  8. O8 CHECK CIRCUIT 361 (RD) FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure the voltage between the reversing lamp relay pin 1, circuit 361 (RD), relay box face side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  O9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. O9 CHECK CIRCUIT 1362 (DG/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b (Gasoline Engine) or C1381t (Diesel Engine)
    • Key in ON position.

    • For gasoline engines, measure the resistance between the PCM C175b-24, circuit 1362 (DG/OG), harness side and the reversing lamp relay pin 2, circuit 1362 (DG/OG), relay box face side.

    • For diesel engines, measure the resistance between the PCM C1381t-3, circuit 1362 (DG/OG), harness side and the reversing lamp relay pin 2, circuit 1362 (DG/OG), relay box face side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  O10.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. O10 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES article or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - DIESEL ENGINE article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
