Pinpoint Test V: The Reversing Lamps Are Inoperative

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. V1 MONITOR THE TRANSMISSION STATUS PID 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Engage the parking brake.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM or SJB Transmission Status PID
    • For vehicles with automatic transmission, monitor the PCM transmission gear status PID while placing the vehicle in REVERSE.
    • For vehicles with a manual transmission, monitor the SJB transmission gear status PID while placing the vehicle in REVERSE.
    • Does the PID indicate the transmission is in REVERSE? 
    1. YES  : For vehicles with an automatic transmission, go to  V2 .

      For vehicles with a manual transmission, go to  V3 .

    2. NO  : For vehicles with an automatic transmission, REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - CD4E article or AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) article to continue diagnosis of the transaxle.

      For vehicles with a manual transmission, go to  V5 .

  2. V2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Gear Selection PID
    • Monitor the instrument cluster gear selection PID while placing the transaxle in REVERSE.
    • Does the PID indicate the transmission is in REVERSE? 
    1. YES  : Go to  V3.
    2. NO  : Go to  V10.
  3. V3 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN (REVERSING LAMPS) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Reversing Lamp

    • Measure the resistance between the LH reversing lamp C451-3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground; or between the RH reversing lamp C461-3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  V4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. V4 CHECK CIRCUIT 140 (BK/PK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280c

    • Measure the resistance between the LH reversing lamp C451-1, circuit 140 (BK/PK), harness side and the SJB C2280c-10, circuit 140 (BK/PK), harness side; or between the RH reversing lamp C461-1, circuit 140 (BK/PK), harness side and the SJB C2280c-10, circuit 140 (BK/PK), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  V9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. V5 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN (REVERSING LAMP SWITCH) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Reversing Lamp Switch C169

    • Measure the resistance between the reversing lamp switch C169-2, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  V6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. V6 CHECK CIRCUIT 1789 (VT/WH) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between the reversing lamp switch C169-1, circuit 1789 (VT/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  V7.
    2. NO  : Go to  V8.
  7. V7 CHECK THE REVERSING LAMP SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.

    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the reversing lamp switch C169-1, circuit 1789 (VT/WH), harness side and the reversing lamp switch C169-2, circuit 57 (BK), harness side.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the reversing lamps illuminate? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new reversing lamp switch. REFER to Reversing Lamp Switch . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to  V9 .
  8. V8 CHECK CIRCUIT 1789 (VT/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280b

    • Measure the resistance between the reversing lamp switch C169-1, circuit 1789 (VT/WH), harness side and the SJB C2280b-7, circuit 1789 (VT/WH), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  V9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. V9 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. V10 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
