Pinpoint Test C: The High Beams Are Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2005 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- C1 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE HIGH BEAM RELAY
- Disconnect: High Beam Relay C1050.
- Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
- Place the multifunction switch in the high beam position. Measure the voltage between the high beam relay 11050-2, circuit 697 (BN), harness side and ground; and between the high beam relay C1050-3, circuit 212 (DB), harness side and ground.
- Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
- Yes : GO to C2.
- No
: If circuit 697 (BN), GO to C4.
If circuit 212 (DB), REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C2 CHECK CIRCUITS 12 (LG/BK) AND 632 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: LH Headlamp C1021 (Mountaineer) or C1020 (Explorer).
- Measure the resistance between LH headlamp, C1021-1 (Mountaineer) or C1020-1 (Explorer), circuit 12 (LG/BK), harness side and the high beam relay C1050-5, circuit 632 (GY/OG), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to C3.
- No : REPAIR circuit 12 (LG/BK) or 632 (GY/OG) as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1205 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the high beam relay C1050-1, circuit 1205 (BK), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : INSTALL a new high beam relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C4 CHECK CIRCUIT 697 (BN) FOR AN OPEN
- Carry out the multifunction switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING article.
- Is the multifunction switch OK?
- Yes : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES . TEST the system for normal operation.
