Section 1415 (Engine -- 4.0L SOHC): Removal: Engine: Removal

CAUTION: If the fuel rail is used as a leverage device, it can be damaged. Care must be taken when working around the fuel rail.

    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Disconnect the spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  3. Disconnect the battery cables. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Remove the nut and disconnect the ground wire.

  5. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainers.

  6. Lift the cover, remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable connector.

  7. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  8. Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  9. Disconnect the windshield washer hose.

  11. Remove the 4 bolts and the hood.
  12. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  13. Remove the power steering pump pulley. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING
  14. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING .
  15. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.

  16. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

  17. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connectors.

  18. Release the wiring harness from the clips on the bulkhead.

  19. Disconnect the transmission control wiring harness pin-type retainers from the engine wiring harness.

  20. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) tube and position it aside.

  21. Disconnect the vacuum hose.

  22. Remove the bolt from the engine ground wire.

  23. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the heater hose.

  24. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and the heater hose.

  25. Remove the bolts and position the heater hoses and bracket aside.
  26. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the coolant pump.

  27. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the degas bottle.

  28. NOTE: Cover the accumulator opening to prevent contamination.
  29. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube from the accumulator.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  30. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube from the condenser.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  31. Disconnect the vacuum hoses.

  32. Disconnect the A/C high-pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.

  33. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube from the condenser.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.

  34. Disconnect the A/C tube from the retainer.

  35. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve tube.
    1. Disconnect the exhaust manifold-to-EGR valve tube fittings.
    2. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-EGR valve tube.

  36. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM .
  37. Remove the push pins and the lower air shroud panel.

  38. Remove the nut and detach the battery cable retainer bracket.

  40. Install a suitable jack stand under the transfer case.

    WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

  44. Remove the 2 bolts and position the RH heat shield aside.

  60. Remove the transmission support insulator nuts and remove the crossmember.

  61. Remove the bolts, springs, flag nuts and separate the muffler from the converter.
    • Discard the gasket.
    • Discard the flag nuts.

  63. Remove the 4 converter-to-manifold nuts.
  64. NOTE: The assistance of another technician may be required.
  65. Remove the transmission-mounted exhaust hanger, the 3-way converter system and the RH heat shield.
    1. Remove the bolt and the converter assembly.
    2. If required, remove the second bolt and mount.

  66. Disconnect the shift cable and remove the bracket.

  68. Index-mark the front axle pinion flange and the front driveshaft.

  72. CAUTION: Always disconnect the front driveshaft from the transfer case first. Otherwise, the weight of the driveshaft can pinch the boot and cause the boot to tear.
    CAUTION: Tape the bearing cups to the driveshaft to prevent them from falling off the spider.

  73. Remove the front driveshaft.

    NOTE: The axle pinion flange is shown, the transfer case output flange, if equipped, is similar.

  75. Mark the driveshaft flange to the rear axle pinion flange, and if equipped, the transfer case rear output flange for assembly reference.
  76. Remove the 4 rear axle flange bolts.

  78. Index-mark the driveshaft at the 6 o'clock position.

  80. Remove the 4 transfer case flange bolts.

    CAUTION: The driveshaft flange fits tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the pinion flange.
    NOTE: Do not rotate the driveshaft.

  82. Using a suitable tool as shown, disconnect the driveshaft flange and remove the driveshaft.
  83. 4x2 vehicles 

  84. Index-mark the transmission output shaft at the 6 o'clock position.
    1. Pull the seal away from the transmission output shaft.
    2. Mark the output shaft at the 6 o'clock position.

  86. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor connector and the fuel tubes from the bracket.

  87. Disconnect the RH HO2S electrical connector from the transmission.

  92. Remove the 4 torque converter nuts.
    • Rotate the crankshaft to access all the nuts.

  112. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Remove the oil filter.
    • To install, tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).

  114. Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir-to-fluid cooler hose and detach the clip.

  115. Remove the bolt and power steering tube support bracket.

  121. Install the special tool on the LH side of the engine.
    • Tighten to 37 Nm (27 lb-ft).

  123. Attach the special tool and using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine.
