Test U: Low Coolant Indicator Is Inoperative
CAUTION:
Use correct test probe adapters when making measurements. Failure to use correct probe adapter may cause damage to connector.
NOTE:
Low coolant warning light will prove out (illuminates) for 30 seconds after ignition switch in turn into RUN position.
NOTE:
Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If low coolant indicator light illuminates with ignition off, go to step 5. If low coolant indicator light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If low coolant indicator light illuminates, go to next step. If low coolant indicator light does not illuminate, go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to RUN position. Wait for 30 seconds. If low coolant indicator light is illuminated after 30 seconds, go to step 11. If low coolant indicator light is not illuminated after 30 seconds, system is operating correctly at this time.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below instrument panel. See Figure. In active command mode request CLNT_LAMP ON. If low coolant indicator light illuminates, go to step 13. If low coolant indicator light does not illuminate, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 20-pin harness connector C201b. See Figure. GEM harness connector is located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. If low coolant indicator light stays illuminated, go to next step. If low coolant light does not stay illuminated, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220a, located behind instrument cluster. See Figure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 12 (Black/Pink wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is not present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If battery voltage is present, repair short circuit to power in Black/Pink wire between GEM and Instrument cluster. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 20-pin harness connector C201b, located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C201b terminal No. 9 (Black/Pink wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.If battery voltage is present, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220a. See Figure. Instrument cluster harness connector C220a is located behind instrument cluster. SeeFigure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between GEM harness connector C201b terminal No. 9 and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 12 (Black/Pink wire). See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Black/Pink wire between instrument cluster and GEM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Ensure ignition switch is on LOCK position and GEM connector C201b is disconnected. If low coolant indicator light stays illuminated, go to next step. If low coolant indicator light does not stay illuminated, go to step 13.
- Ensure instrument cluster harness connector C220a is disconnected. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 12 (Black/Pink wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Pink wire between instrument cluster and GEM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect low coolant sensor 2-pin harness connector C1069. See Fig 1. Low coolant sensor harness connector is located at right front of engine compartment. See Figure. If low coolant indicator light stays illuminated after 30 seconds, go to next step. If low coolant indicator light does not stay illuminated after 30 seconds, replace coolant level sensor. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and low coolant sensor connector C1069 terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See Fig 1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire between low coolant sensorand ground point located at right front part of engine compartment. See Figure. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 12-pin harness connector C201a. GEM harness connector is located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 1 (White/Light Blue wire). See Fig 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in White/Light Blue wire between low coolant level sensor and GEM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Ensure all Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connectors are disconnected, GEM is located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. Visually inspect GEM connectors for loose connections, pushed out pins or corrosion. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, reconnect GEM connectors and operate system to verify concern is still present. If concern is not present, clear DTCs and repeat self-test. If no concern is found at this point, system is operating correctly at this time. If concern still present, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
