Test M: Safety Belt Warning Indicator Does Not Operate Correctly

NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If safety belt warning indicator light does not illuminate, go to next step. If safety belt warning indicator light illuminates, go to step  5.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If safety belt warning indicator light illuminates, go to next step. If safety belt warning indicator light does not illuminate, go to step  4.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Buckle safety belt. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wait 30 seconds for safety belt warning indicator light to stop illuminating (prove out). If safety belt warning indicator light stops illuminating, system is working properly at this time. Verify the symptom. If safety belt warning indicator light does not stop illuminating, go to step  9.
  4. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below instrument panel. See Figure. With Generic Electronic Module (GEM) in active command mode, select WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME. Trigger the GEM SBLT LAMP ON. If safety belt warning indicator light illuminates, go to step  13. If safety belt warning indicator light does not illuminate, go to step  7.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C201c. See Figure. GEM is located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If safety belt warning indicator light is illuminated, go to next step. If safety belt warning indicator light is not illuminated, go to step  13.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220a, located behind instrument cluster. See Figure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 13 (Yellow wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is not present, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If battery voltage is present, repair short circuit to power in Yellow wire between instrument cluster and GEM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C201c, located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C201c terminal No. 19 (Yellow wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, go to step  13.
  8. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220a, located behind instrument cluster. SeeFigure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between GEM harness connector C201c terminal No. 19 and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 13 (Yellow wire). See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Yellow wire between GEM and instrument cluster. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  9. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below instrument panel. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select (RCM) PID DSBELT while buckling and unbuckling driver safety belt. If PID responds correctly, go to next step. If PID does not respond correctly, check air bag restraint system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester in active command mode, trigger the SAFETY BELT WARNING CHIME. If chime sounds, go to next step. If chime does not sound, check air bag restraint system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  11. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C201c. See Figure. GEM connectors are disconnected, GEM is located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. If safety belt indicator light remains illuminated, go to next step. If safety belt indicator light does not remain illuminated, go to step  13.
  12. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220a, located behind instrument cluster. SeeFigure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 13 (Yellow wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit to ground in Yellow wire between instrument cluster and GEM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  13. Ensure all Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connectors are disconnected. GEM is located behind Central Junction Box (CJB). See Figure. Visually inspect GEM connectors for loose connections, pushed out pins or corrosion. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, reconnect GEM connectors and operate system to verify concern is still present. If concern is not present, clear DTCs and repeat self-test. If no concern is found at this point, system is operating correctly at this time. If concern still present, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
