Test W: Check Fuel Cap Indicator Is Inoperative/Always On
NOTE:
Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin harness connector C175, located at right rear of engine compartment. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 82 (Black/White wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If check fuel indicator light does not illuminate, go to next step. If check fuel indicator light illuminates, repair PCM concern. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220b, located behind instrument cluster. SeeFigure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 82 and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Also measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms at measurement between PCM and instrument cluster harness connectors, and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster harness connector. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If any resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Black/White wire between instrument cluster and PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is not present, go to next step. If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Black/White wire between instrument cluster and PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Visually inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for contamination or damage. If instrument cluster printed circuit is okay, go to next step. If instrument cluster printed circuit is faulty, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Check all PCM harness connector C175 terminals for corroded or pushed-out pins. See Figure. If Connector or terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, connect PCM connector and ensure is connected properly. Operate system for and check if concern is still present. If concern is still present, install a new PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating properly at this time. Clear DTCs and check system for normal operation.
