Test I: Charging System Indicator Inoperative

NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check charging system for proper operation. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If charging system is operating properly, go to next step. If charging system is not operating properly, repair charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin harness connector C175, located at right rear of engine compartment. See Figure. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and PCM harness connector C175 terminals No. 98 (Light Green/Red wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging system warning indicator light does not illuminates, go to next step. If charging system warning indicator light illuminate, go to step  5.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b, located behind instrument cluster. SeeFigure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster to access connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C220bterminal No. 9 and PCM harness connector C175 terminals No. 98 (Light Green/Red wire). See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Green/Red wire between Instrument cluster and PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C175 terminal No. 10 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage exists, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open circuit between instrument cluster and Central Junction Box (CJB). CJB is located behind left side of instrument panel. See Figure. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  5. Check all PCM harness connector C175 terminals for corroded or pushed-out pins. If Connector or terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, connect PCM connector and ensure is seated correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is not present, system is operating properly at this time. If concern still present, install a new PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and check system for normal operation.
