Using Scan Tool

NOTE: Tests included in this article are written specifically for Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect WDS or NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Figure. Perform self-diagnostic as follows:

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select vehicle to be tested from WDS or NGS tester menu. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article.
  2. If WDS or NGS tester responds with CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article.
  3. If WDS or NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), perform TEST AA: NO COMMUNICATION WITH GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. If WDS or NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Instrument Cluster Module (ICM), perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If WDS or NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform ICM and GEM self-tests. Perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  and INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DTC INDEX  tables.   6. If no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
