Test P: Charge System Indicator Inoperative/Always On
NOTE:
Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
- Check charging system operation. See SYSTEM TESTS in GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL. If charging system is operating properly, go to next step. If charging system is not operating properly, repair as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. If charging indicator is illuminated, go to step 5.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector C102a. See Figure. Generator connector C102a is located in engine compartment. See Figure. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and generator harness connector C102a terminal No. 1 (Light Green/Red wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. If charging indicator is illuminated, repair or replace generator as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 12-pin instrument cluster harness connector C220a. See Figure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster for access to connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between generator harness connector C102a terminal No. 1 and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 5 (Light Green/Red wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 7. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector C102a. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging indicator is illuminated, go to next step. If charging indicator is not illuminated, replace generator as necessary. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in GENERATOR & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 12-pin instrument cluster harness connector C220a. See Figure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster for access to connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and generator harness connector C102a terminal No. 1 (Light Green/Red wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect all instrument cluster harness connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If terminals are damaged, repair or replace as necessary. If terminals are not damaged, reconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Ensure instrument cluster harness connectors are seated properly. If problem still exists, replace instrument cluster module. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, clear DTCs, repeat self-test and check system for normal operation.
