Test O: Brake Indicator Inoperative/Always On
NOTE:
Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
NOTE:
Before testing, ensure brake fluid level is correct.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Monitor Generic Electronic Module (GEM) PIDs IGN_KEY, IGN_S, IGN_R and IGN_A while cycling ignition switch through all positions. If PIDs agree with ignition switch positions, go to next step. If PIDs do not agree with ignition switch positions, test ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor GEM PID PRK_BRK while applying and releasing parking brake. WDS or NGS tester should display ON with parking brake applied, and OFF with parking brake released. If PID agrees with parking brake position, go to next step. If PID does not agree with parking brake position, go to step 5.
- Ensure parking brake is released. Ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. If BRAKE indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is illuminated, go to step 10.
- Using WDS or NGS tester, trigger GEM active command BKFLD LOW on. If BRAKE indicator illuminates, go to step 13. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, go to step 8.
- Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor GEM PID PRK_BRK while applying and releasing parking brake. WDS or NGS tester should display ON with parking brake applied, and OFF with parking brake released. If PID agrees with parking brake position, go to step 7. If PID does not agree with parking brake position, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 12-pin Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connector C201d. See Figure. GEM is located behind left side of instrument panel, next to central junction box. See Figure. Disconnect parking brake switch one-pin harness connector C306. See Fig 1. Parking brake switch is located on parking brake lever assembly. See Figure. Measure resistance between parking brake switch harness connector C318 single terminal (Light Blue/Black wire)and GEM harness connector C201d terminal No. 4 (Violet/Yellow wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace parking brake switch. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in either Light Blue/Black wire or Violet/Yellow wire between parking brake switch and GEM. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 12-pin Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connector C201d. See Figure. GEM is located behind left side of instrument panel, next to central junction box. See Figure. Disconnect parking brake switch one-pin harness connector C306. See Fig 1. Parking brake switch is located on parking brake lever assembly. See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and GEM harness connector C201d terminal No. 4 (Violet/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace parking brake switch. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit in either Light Blue/Black wire or Violet/Yellow wire between parking brake switch and GEM. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 26-pin Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connector C201e. See Figure. GEM is located behind left side of instrument panel, next to central junction box. See Figure. Disconnect 20-pin instrument cluster harness connector C220b. See Figure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster for access to connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at GEM harness connector C201e terminal No. 13 (Violet/Yellow wire). If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short circuit in Violet/Yellow wire between GEM, instrument cluster and brake fluid level sensor. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between GEM harness connector C201e terminal No. 13 and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 14 (Violet/Yellow wire). See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 14. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit (in Violet/Yellow wire) between GEM and instrument cluster. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect brake fluid level sensor 3-pin harness connector C124. See Figure. Brake fluid level sensor is located on brake fluid reservoir. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Ensure parking brake is released. If BRAKE indicator is illuminated, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is not illuminated, replace brake fluid level sensor. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 26-pin Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connector C201e. See Figure. GEM is located behind left side of instrument panel, next to central junction box. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If BRAKE indicator is illuminated, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator is not illuminated, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 20-pin instrument cluster harness connector C220b. See Figure. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster for access to connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and GEM harness connector C201e terminal No. 13 (Violet/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 14. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit in Violet/Yellow wire between GEM and instrument cluster. For INSTRUMENT CLUSTER circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Disconnect all GEM harness connectors. Inspect all GEM harness connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If terminals are damaged, repair or replace as necessary. If terminals are not damaged, reconnect all GEM harness connectors. Ensure GEM harness connectors are seated properly. If problem still exists, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
- Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect all instrument cluster harness connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If terminals are damaged, repair or replace as necessary. If terminals are not damaged, reconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Ensure instrument cluster harness connectors are seated properly. If problem still exists, replace instrument cluster module. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, clear DTCs, repeat self-test and check system for normal operation.
NOTE:
The circuit between parking brake switch and Generic Electronic Module (GEM), changes wire color at splice S246. Splice S246 is located at right side behind dash panel. From parking brake switch harness connector C306 to splice S246, wire color is Light Blue/Black. And from splice S246 to GEM harness connector C201d, wire color is Violet/Yellow.
NOTE:
The circuit between parking brake switch and Generic Electronic Module (GEM), changes wire color at splice S246. Splice S246 is located at right side behind dash panel. From parking brake switch harness connector C306 to splice S246, wire color is Light Blue/Black. And from splice S246 to GEM harness connector C201d, wire color is Violet/Yellow.
