Removal & Installation

  1. Remove passenger and driver air bag module. For additional information, see appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINT. Raise and support vehicle. Remove left front wheel and tire assembly, also remove fender splash shield away from the dash panel by removing screws and retainers.
  2. Disconnect the bulkhead electrical connector from inside the fender opening by loosing the bolt. Release the bulkhead electrical connector from the dash panel.
  3. Install wheel and tire assembly. Lower vehicle, remove floor console and upper right side instrument panel support bolt. Disconnect the antenna in-line connector and climate control vacuum harness connector.
  4. Close glove compartment door and remove right and left scuff plates. Also remove A-pillar lower trim panels pin-type retainers and remove the A-pillar lower trim panels.
  5. Remove right and left side windshield side garnish moldings. If equipped with a convertible top, remove pin-type retainers. Position right and left side door weather-strips aside. Disconnect climate control and right side main wiring harness electrical connectors.
  6. Remove instrument panel steering column cover screws and remove instrument panel steering column cover. Remove instrument panel reinforcement bolts and remove the instrument panel reinforcement panel.
  7. Separate intermediate shaft from the steering column shaft by removing pinch bolt. Slightly pull back corner of the carpet. Disconnect left side main wiring harness electrical connectors. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) electrical connectors.
  8. Disconnect Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module electrical connector and release locking tab. If equipped, disconnect shift interlock assembly from selector lever, remove screw and R-clip. Disconnect shift interlock assembly from selector lever and remove audio unit. If equipped, disconnect shifter assembly electrical connector.
  9. Rotate temperature control switch to the cool position. Release temperature control cable from the blend door and remove four center instrument panel support bolts. Remove right and left side instrument panel support bolt and nut, through the audio unit opening.
  10. Remove instrument panel defroster grille and remove upper instrument panel support bolts. With a helper, remove instrument panel.
  11. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts, nut and screws to specification. See INSTRUMENT PANEL TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
