Section 950 (Engine - 5.4L (3V) - F250-F550 Super Duty): Removal: Engine

SPECIAL TOOLS

Modular Engine Lift Bracket 303-F047 (014-00073) or equivalent

    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Remove the hood.
  3. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  4. Remove the cowl vent grille. For additional information, refer to COWL PANEL GRILLE .
  5. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to RADIATOR -- GASOLINE ENGINES .
  6. Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to DEGAS BOTTLE .
  7. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM). For additional information, refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
  8. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  9. Drain the engine oil and remove and discard the oil filter.
  10. Disconnect the degas bottle coolant hose.

  11. Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors on the LH fender splash shield.

  12. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering pump assembly aside.

  13. Disconnect the generator wiring harness retainer from the RH cylinder head.

  14. Disconnect the A/C compressor and the A/C high pressure cut-off switch electrical connectors.

  15. Disconnect the generator wiring harness retainer from the RH cylinder head and position the harness aside.

  16. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wiring harness retainer from the starter motor wiring harness.

  17. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainer from the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve bracket.

  18. Disconnect the EVAP tube quick connect couplings and the electrical connector from EVAP canister purge valve. For additional information, refer to QUICK CONNECT COUPLING .

  19. Remove the 3 nuts and remove the EVAP canister purge valve and bracket assembly.

  20. Disconnect the body wiring harness retainer from the degas bottle support bracket.

  21. Remove the 3 nuts and the degas bottle support bracket.

  22. Remove the 2 nuts and the air cleaner outlet tube support bracket.

  23. Disconnect the heater hose.

  24. Manual transmission vehicles 

  25. Remove the clutch and pressure plate. For additional information, refer to CLUTCH DISC AND PRESSURE PLATE .
  26. Automatic transmission vehicles 

  27. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTER MOTOR .
  28. Remove the nut and position the transmission oil cooler lines and bracket aside.

  29. Remove the 2 bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.

  30. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.

  31. Remove the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
    • Discard the nuts.

  32. NOTE: The upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later.

  33. Remove the 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.
  34. Remove the nut, the ground cable and position the transmission fluid filler tube aside.

  35. All vehicles 

  36. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.

  37. Remove the stud bolt and position the ground strap aside.

  38. Disconnect the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor electrical connector.

  39. Remove the nut and the starter wiring harness support bracket.

  40. Disconnect the crank shaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  41. Remove the 3 bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.

  42. Disconnect the 2 heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.

  43. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold flange nuts.

  45. Remove the 6 RH and LH motor mount nuts.
  46. Automatic transmission vehicles 

  47. Remove the upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.

  48. All vehicles 

  49. Install the special tool.

  50. Using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
