Test R: Safety Belt Warning Indicator Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly (Chime Is Operative)

  1. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Connect NGS tester (418-F052). Turn ignition ON. Enter GEM active command mode. Select warning lamps active command and turn safety belt warning indicator ON and then OFF. If indicator is ON when commanded ON and OFF when commanded OFF, go to the next step. If indicator does not respond as commanded, go to step 4.
  2. Deactivate air bag restraint system. Refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect GEM harness connector C101. Disconnect Restraints Control Module (RCM) connector C423. Measure resistance between GEM harness connector C101 terminal No. 17 (Black/Red wire) and RCM harness connector C423 terminal No. 26 (Black/Red wire). See Fig 1 and Fig 3 . Also measure resistance between GEM harness connector C101 terminal No. 17 and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between C101 and C423, and greater than 10k/ohms between C101 and ground, go to next step. If resistance is not as stated, repair open or short to ground in Black/Red wire.
  3. Turn ignition ON. Measure voltage between GEM harness connector C101 terminal No. 17 (Black/Red wire) and ground. If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Black/Red wire. If no voltage is present, replace RCM. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  4. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C105. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between GEM harness connector C105 terminal No. 18 (Black/Red wire) and ground. If safety belt indicator is on with jumper wire connected and off with jumper wire disconnected, replace GEM. If safety belt indicator is not on with jumper wire connected and not off with jumper wire disconnected, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C809. Measure resistance between harness connector C809 terminal No. 18 (Black/Blue wire) and harness connector C105 terminal No. 18 (Black/Blue wire). See Figure and Fig 2 . Also measure resistance between harness connector C809 terminal No. 18 and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between C809 and C105, and greater than 10k/ohms between C809 and ground, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Black/Blue wire.
  6. Turn ignition ON. Measure voltage between harness connector C809 terminal No. 18 and ground. See Figure. If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Black/Blue wire. If no voltage is present, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and connectors that are not connected properly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose connectors. Operate system. If problem still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If problem does not exist, system is operating properly at this time. Clear any DTCs and retest.
