Test Y: Check Fuel Cap Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. Turn to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM connector C415. Connect a 10-amp fuse jumper wire between harness connector C415 terminal No. 73 (SVT only), or harness connector terminal No. 46 (all others), and ground. See Fig 1. Turn ignition ON. If check fuel cap indicator is on with jumper wire connected and off with jumper wire disconnected, diagnose EVAP system. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If check fuel cap indicator is never on, go to next step. If check fuel cap indicator is always on, go to step  4.
  2. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C809. Measure resistance between harness connector C809 terminal No. 25 (Black/White wire) and PCM harness connector C415 terminal No. 46 (SVT only) or terminal No. 73 (all others). See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire.
  3. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Measure voltage between harness connector C809 terminal No. 25 (Black/White wire) and ground. If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Black/White wire. If no voltage is present, go to step  5.
  4. Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C809 . Measure resistance between harness connector C809 terminal No. 25 (Black/White wire) and ground. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10k/ohms, repair short to ground in Black/White wire.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and connectors that are not connected properly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose connectors. Operate system. If problem still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Configure replacement instrument cluster, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article. If problem does not exist, system is operating properly at this time. Clear any DTCs and retest.
