Test W: Water In Fuel Warning Indicator Inoperative (Diesel)

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC P1139 is retrieved, go to step  5. If any other PCM related DTCs were retrieved, go appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no related DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If water in fuel indicator operates correctly, system is okay at this time. If water in fuel indicator does not operate correctly, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select instrument cluster WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger active command ALL LAMPS on and off. Observe the water in fuel indicator. If water in fuel indicator does not illuminate and turn off as commanded, go to step  5. If water in fuel indicator does illuminate and turn off as commanded, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check PCM for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace PCM and retest system operation. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, install original PCM and go to next step. Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check instrument cluster for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
