Test U: 4X4/4X4 Low Range Indicator Inoperative/Always On (Manual Shift)

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select instrument cluster WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger active command ALL LAMPS on and off. Observe the 4X4 and 4X4 LOW indicators. If 4X4 and 4X4 LOW indicators do not illuminate and turn off as commanded, go to step  8. If indicators do illuminate and turn off as commanded and the 4X4 indicator was inoperative, go to next step. If indicators do illuminate and turn off as commanded and the 4X4 LOW indicator was inoperative, go to step  4. If indicators do illuminate and turn off as commanded and the 4X4 is always on, go to step  6. If indicators do illuminate and turn off as commanded and the 4X4 LOW indicator is always on, go to step  7.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 4X4 range selector switch 2-pin harness connector C1177. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220b. Measure resistance in Light Blue wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 5 and 4X4 range selector switch 2-pin harness connector C1177 terminal No. 2. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  3. Ensure ignition is in the LOCK position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 5 (Light Blue wire). If any voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Light Blue wire and test system operation. If no voltage is present, go to step  6.
  4. Disconnect 4X4 range selector switch 2-pin harness connector C1177. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220b. Measure resistance in Brown/Yellow wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 4 and 4X4 range selector switch 2-pin harness connector C1177 terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Brown/Yellow wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. Ensure ignition switch is in the LOCK position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 4 (Brown/Yellow wire). See Figure. If any voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Brown/Yellow wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If no voltage is present, replace 4X4 range selector switch and test system operation. See 4X4 RANGE SELECTOR SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 4X4 range selector switch 2-pin harness connector C1177. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220b. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 5 (Light Blue wire). If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace 4X4 range selector switch. See 4X4 RANGE SELECTOR SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 4X4 range selector switch 2-pin harness connector C1177. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220b. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 4 (Brown/Yellow wire). If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace 4X4 range selector switch. See 4X4 RANGE SELECTOR SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Brown/Yellow wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check instrument cluster for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
